READY PLAYER 1
1. Explain on what is the OASIS?
(10 marks)

-He Oasis of Ready Player One is the stuff of dreams. It’s a world made up of a thousand
worlds. It’s also the collective accumulation of Mankind’s creativity over half a century,
compressed into a digital cube 30 light hours long and wide.

-In Ready Player One, the main character, Wade, uses the OASIS in order to escape the
depression and hopelessness that he would have inevitably faced in the real world, as
shown through his mother and aunt, but he ends up needing the OASIS to find friendship
and hope and, ultimately, an escape from the OASIS itself.

- This is the Oasis. It's a place where the limits of reality are your own imagination. You
can do anything. go anywhere. Like the Vocation Planet. Surf'a 60-foot monster wove in
Howal, you can ski down the Pyramids, you can climb Mount Everest with Batman. Check
out this place. It's a casino the size of a planet You can lose your money there, you can get
married, you can get divorced, you can...you can go in there. People come to the Oasis for
all the things they can do, but they stay because of all the things they can be: tall,
beautiful, scary, a different sex, a different species, live action, cartoon, it's all your call.
Yeah, that's me...well, that's my avatar, at least until I feel like changing it. Except for
eating, sleeping and bathroom breaks, whatever people want to do, they do it in the Oasis.
And since everyone is here, this is where we meet each other. This is where
we make friends.
2. Explain what is IOI? (5 mark)

 In the film, Innovative Online Industries is a virtual-reality equipment

manufacturing corporation, rather than a communications company. This means
that they control people's access to OASIS. In the film's original script, it is implied
that IOI was a subsidiary of GSS

 Initially a startup internet service provider, the company grew by acquiring

hundreds of telecommunications companies, making itself into a communications
conglomerate and the largest internet service provide
3. List down the main characters in the movie. (10 mark)

 Tye Sheridan as Wade Watts / Parzival

 Olivia Cooke as Samantha Cooke / Art3mis
 Ben Mendelsohn as Nolan Sorrento / IOI-655321
 Lena Waithe as Helen Harris / Aech
 T.J. Miller as i-R0k
 Simon Pegg as Ogden Morrow / The Curator
 Mark Rylance as James Halliday / Anorak the All-Knowing
 Philip Zhao as Zhou / Sho
 Win Morisaki as Toshiro / Daito
 Hannah John-Kamen as F'Nale Zandor
 Susan Lynch as Alice
 Ralph Ineson as Rick
 Perdita Weeks as Karen "Kira" Underwood
4. As the result of playing too much and addicted to the game, people are being forced to
pay their debt to the IOI. How did you react to the image of debtors being forced into
indentured servitude? ( 5 mark)

I feel it is very unfair and sympathize with the indenture debtors because they are
subjected to physical punishment and do not receive legal aid from the court. Indenture
debtors were removed from their families and deprived of their right to work for money
outside their contract for that period. Those who are forced into contracts are often
subjected to longer periods and are exploited in their energy and vitality.
5. From the whole movie, what do you think the most important message that contains in
the movie? Explain why. ( 10 mark)

Based on the 2011 Ernest Cline novel of the same name, “Ready Player One” is blessed to
have been directed by Steven Spielberg, who is responsible for all of the film’s positive
attributes. The film shows us Cline’s vision of 2045 where the world is overpopulated and the
environment is rapidly degrading, and, much like what will likely happen in real life, the
majority of the world’s population has chosen to purposefully ignore this problem by
plugging themselves into a worldwide virtual reality world known as the “OASIS.”

Within the OASIS, you play a larger-than-life video game where you not only can do
whatever you want, but can be whoever you want to be. On paper, this seems a premise ripe
for criticism of today’s society’s escapist fantasies, but this movie misses out even on that
most basic opportunity.

The film follows the efforts of Wade Watts, an 18-year-old orphan portrayed by Tye
Sheridan. Watts attempts to locate an “Easter egg” left in the OASIS by its god-like creator,
James Halliday, portrayed by Mark Rylance, before his death prior to the beginning of the
film. Whoever locates this egg will not only gain Halliday’s fortune, but control of the
OASIS as a whole as well. Wade races to find this egg in order to prevent it from falling into
the hands of the film’s villain, a sleazy corporate executive who seeks to inundate the OASIS
with endless pop-up ads if he gains control.
6. If given chance to participate in the world such as OASIS, would you take it? Why.
(10 marks)

Yes i would take it, because it’s a place where the limits of reality are your own
imagination. I can do anything, go anywhere. Like the Vacation Planet. Surf a 50-foot
monster wave in Hawaii, I can ski down the Pyramids, I can climb Mount Everest with
Batman.

OASIS is now the world's largest public library, providing free access to every book ever
written, every song ever recorded and every movie, television show, video game, and
piece of artwork ever created.

In the Oasis, players are able to earn digital currency and transact with it inside the virtual
world as well as in the real-world. Similar to the definition of fiat currency today, digital
currency within the virtual world has value because a tipping point quorum of supply and
demand has occurred.
