EDITOR'S MESSAGE

Greetings,

I trust this issue of our Department's newsletter, HumSci 360o, finds you in good vigour.

We are once again forced to switch to online teaching mode due to the second wave of the pandemic. It
shows that our precautions and safety protocols should be more intensive. I wish to insist the same to
everyone. Our faculty members are now equipped well, in both skills and tools, to continue their teaching
and other academic and research related activities without any compromise on quality. I therefore am very
much pleased to express my appreciations to them.

We are always grateful to the Management and the Principal for their constant motivation and support
which helps us to reach our fullest potential.

Dr. M. Muthusamy
Professor & Head of the Department

ARTICLE: PROFESSION AND PROFESSIONALS

‘Teachers of higher education institutions are regarded as professionals’. They have a special
obligation in their minds towards the wellbeing of this society. The faculty members should contemplate
what the society anticipates from them as professionals. Every faculty member has to internalize what
makes their profession distinctive compared to other occupations.

Bayles (1989) explicates the term ‘profession’ as ‘those forms of work, which involves advanced
expertise, selfregulation and concerted service to the public welfare’.

From this explication it is obvious that:

i. Professionals deal with vast and complex knowledge
ii. Professionals continue to create new knowledge in their profession
iii. Professionals deal with highstake activities
iv. Professionals work based on trust with clients
v. Professionals are selfregulating

In case you need to decide whether your occupation may be termed as a profession or not, you
must check the nearness of these five fundamental characteristics. Indeed, on the off chance that one of the
five characteristics is lost, at that point the occupation cannot be named as a profession. The culmination of
this recommendation is that, in case the socalled ‘professionals’ do not observe these five characteristics
in their profession, they no more stay as genuine professionals.

‘A faculty member of an higher education institute should make efforts to create new knowledge in
his/her field of specialization (by reading journals/attending conferences and so on) and contribute to the
creation of new knowledge by engaging in research or guiding student’s research, teaching, etc...'

Being a professional, we should constantly try to identify which one of the five fundamental
characteristics is missing or diminishing in us and work to address the same.
