to give an idea of when to use them.

on the 4th of July, 2020 in September
in 2020

in – with months of the year, year, some expressions

at – with time
Different Ways to Write the Date
13th October, 2020 13/10/2020 10/13/2020
13 October, 2020 13-10-2020 10-13-2020
13 Oct 2020 13-10-20 10-13-20

What do you think is the most appropriate way to write the date?

To tell the truth, there isn’t any. But in order not to get confused about
the month and the day, it is better to write it at least this way:
13 October, 2020
You will realize how important it is when you check back on your
documents with old handwritten dates.
Conversation
A. Listen to the conversation. When is Ahmed’s
birthday?
Ahmed: Hello, Zacaria. Are you busy?
Zacaria: Hi, Ahmed! Er… a little bit. But why?
Ahmed: OMG! I am a bit sulky now.
Zacaria: Why are you sulky? I know it is your special day on Monday.
Ahmed: OMG! You really forgot my birthday.
Zacaria: Huh?
Ahmed: Of course, it is today. It is the 14th of May.
Zacaria: Oh! Is it the 14th today? I thought it is just the 13th. Apologies, my
dear friend. Hold on, I will get there right away.

B. Practice the conversation with a partner. Switch roles and practice

it again.
Word Focus
birthday = the day of a person's birth
busy = having so many things to do

Talk about Your Free Time
Tom’s Day
On Sunday, Tom gets up at 10
o’clock. Then he reads his newspaper in
the kitchen. He has breakfast at 11.30
and then he telephones his mother in
Scotland.

In the afternoon, at 1.00, Tom plays

tennis with his sister and after that, they
eat dinner in a restaurant. At 6.00, Tom
swims for one hour and then he goes by
bike to his brother’s house. They talk
and listen to music.

Tom watches television in the

evening and drinks a glass of Jack
Daniel’s whiskey. He goes to bed at
11.30.
After reading the passage – Tom’s Day, accomplish this. On a sheet of paper,
write the numbers 1 to 10. Answer the questions. Turn in your output to your
teacher for your performance task.

2. What does he usually read?
3. What does he do after breakfast?
4. Who does he play tennis with?
5. How long does he usually swim?
6. Do you think Tom has a good relationship with his brother?
7. Do you think that he goes to bed early?
8. Do you think he is sporty enough?
9. What time do you usually go to bed?
10. What time do you usually wake up?
