Firestop Submittal

Project : Example Project

Client: Client
First Issue: Date

Submitted by: Demetri Mavrikis – Hilti Engineering

This submittal is generated based on information provided by Client.

Therefore, Hilti makes no representation as to the suitability of these systems for their intended use.
Dear Example,

Hilti Engineering assisted Client with the passive fire protection for the Example Project situated in City. All
applications are rated for a EI120 fire-rating or superior. This assumption needs to be confirmed

Hilti supplies tested and approved firestop systems that resist the spread of fire according to requirements
indicated, resist passage of smoke and other toxic gases as well as maintain original fire resistance rating
of construction component penetrated.

We are pleased to make recommendations for passive fire protection to restore the integrity of fire barriers
that have items penetrating it as well as for all joints. The intention is to minimize the number of different
products required, and the Hilti engineering department makes their best efforts to ensure that the customer
could get the ideal solution.

It must be noted that a fire rating is not determined by a product, but by a system. All recommendations
made are based on tested and approved systems. These systems are specific to each of the scenarios and
all installations must be done strictly according to the specific approval document.

Hilti passive fire protection chemical products are used to form an approval for a tested system with a fire
rating. Recommendations requires the use of Hilti firestop products which have international approvals or
certificates of compliance. These recommendations are product specific, and no substitutions are allowed.
The approvals recommended are in accordance with British (BS), European (EN) and American (UL)
standards as indicated on the specific approval document.

For applications not illustrated in the document below, please contact Hilti Engineering Services for an
approval document or Engineering Judgement.

If there are any questions or any technical queries, please feel free to contact the Hilti Engineering
Department.

HVAC Ducts

Description
For UL standards (Northern America) W-J-7109 allows for a 2-hour fire “F” rating.
Mineral wool needs to be installed in all annular gaps. A minimum thickness of 95mm mineral wool
is required with a density of at least 64kg/m3. The backing material should be installed on both
sides.
Installation
A sealant CFS-S ACR (or CP 606) needs to be applied around all the edges. A thickness of 16mm
needs to be applied to all surfaces in contact with the mineral wool. Where the duct comes into
direct contact with the wall, a 6mm bead needs to be applied to all lengths. Boards should be
painted with CP670 coating.

Note: The pipes in this image need to be sealed as well. See plastic pipes.

Blank Openings

Description
Blank openings can be sealed with coated board CP670 and sealed with acryllic sealant CP606
around edges. Any penetrations through the blank openings will need to be further assessed.
Openings can be sized up to 1200mm x 1200mm for an EI 120 rating.
Installation
Board CP670 needs to be cut to size and sealed around all edges with CP606.

Cable Trays

Description
The rating for the cable tray penetration is in accordance to the European Standards ETA 11/0429.
Depending on the arrangement and requirements of the cables, Additional Protection is possible.
The minimum rating EI60 is illustrated below (left). An EI120 rating (right) can be achieved when
mineral wool of thickness 30mm is wrapped around the cables up to 200mm from penetration.

Installtion
Coated board CP670 should be installed on both ends of the penetration and cut to size. Holes
should be made for penetrations.
All edges, penetrants and exposed edges must be sealed with CFS-S ACR (CP 606).
Trays, conduits and cables also need to be coated with CFS-CT (CP 670) over a length of at least
200mm on each side of the penetration. A 2mm wet thickness is to be applied.

Plastic Pipes

Description
In accordance with ETA 10/0405 the penetration will achieve EI120 rating when installed according
to recommendation.
The pipes will need to be wrapped with CFS-W EL. The number of times is dependent on the fire
rating and size of pipes. The penetration will need to be sealed with coated board CP670 and
sealed with CP 606.
Installtion
CFS-W EL will need to be wrapped around the pipes on both ends of the penetration according to
the size of the pipe and the fire rating required.CP670 coated board will need to be placed in the
void and sealed along all edges and perimeter of the pipe with CP606 to a thickness of 15mm on
both ends of the penetration. This needs to be done on both sides of the penetration.
Note the various number of time the pipes need to be wrapped with the collar depending on the
diameter of the pipe.

Metal Pipes

Description
In accordance with ETA 11/0429 to achieve an EI120 rating for metal pipes, the pipe should be
insulated around the penetration to prevent the contents from boiling. The insulation is typically
done with standard mineral wool extending 200mm from either side of the penetration.

Installtion
The openings need to be filled with CP670 coated board and sealed along all edged with CP 606
and around the circumference of the pipe to a thickness of 15mm on both sides of the penetration.
The mineral wool shall be applied to both ends and extend 200mm from the penetration.
