How to Keep Yourself Entertained


Class: General Conversation Class
Level: Beginner
Time: 90 minutes

A. INTRODUCTION
In this chapter you will:
• Discuss about ways to keep yourself entertained
• Learn about activity to entertain yourself.
• Learn about Questions tag
• Learn pronunciation consonant /g/ and /j/

B. WARMING UP
In this session, student will do warming-up before starting the lesson.

C. ENTERTAIN YOURSELF

Type of activity Draw, do a workout, do skincare, do a movie marathon, cook,


create a social media content, clean up, play some games, learn
something new.

Frequency once a week, once a month, twice in a month, etc.

Below are some expressions or phrases when you are Shopping or eat outside or in Public Places.
• Phrases/expressions a shop assistant says:
“Can I help you?”
“Are you looking for something?”
“Do you need any help?”
“We don’t have any left in stock.”

• Phrases/expressions a customer says:


“I am looking for….”
“I’d like to buy….”
“Do you have this in medium (size) / blue (color)?”
“What are the best dish for today?”

• Phrases/expressions when talking about the price:


“Is this one on sale?” (customer)
“There is a discount of 50% on this one.” (shop assistant)
“It’s cheap.”
“It’s expensive.”

• Phrases/expressions when customer is going to try on something:


“Can I try this on?”
“Where is the changing room / fitting room?”
“I’d like to try on this one, please.”
“I’d like to order a take out, please”

D. QUESTION TAG
We can add question tags like isn't it?, can you? or didn't they? to a statement to make it into
a question. Question tags are more common in speaking than writing.
We often use question tags when we expect the listener to agree with our statement.
Positive Statements Negative statements

when the statement is positive, we use a when the statement is negaitive, we use a
negative question tag. positive question tag.

Today’s class session is offline, isn’t it? Today’s class session isn’t offline, is it?

She goes to the supermarket today, doesn’t She doesn’t go to the supermarket today,

They eat together at Nasi Padang, don’t They don’t eat together at Nasi Padang, do

F. PRONUNCIATION
PRONUNCIATION OF CONSONANT “G” AND “J”
Tip: The letter “g” changes sound in various words. It is pronounced as /j/ in some words and as /g/ in
other word. The rule is that letter “g” is pronounced as /j/ when it is followed by letter “e”, “i” or “y”.
The second rule is that letter “g” retains sound /g/ when it comes last in a word.

G. EXERCISE
Speaking
Take it in turns with your partner to talk about the activity that you like to do to enjoy yourself. Give
yourself two minutes to prepare your answer. You should say:
● what you do there,
● how often you do it,
● why you like to do it.

Waitperson : Hi. How are you doing this afternoon?
Customer : Fine, thank you. Can I see a menu, please?
Waitperson : Certainly, here you are.
Customer : Thank you. What's today's special?
Waitperson : Grilled tuna and cheese on rye.
Customer : That sounds good. The dish come with the drink, isn’t it?
Waitperson : Unfortunately, no. Would you like something to drink
Customer : Yes, I'd like a coke.
Waitperson : Thank you. (returning with the food) Here you are. Enjoy your meal!
Customer : Thank you.
Waitperson : Can I get you anything else?
Customer : No thanks. I'd like the check, please.
Waitperson : That'll be $14.95.
