brain. The episode is brief ___met
(lasting less than a couple of ___unmet
minutes) and is followed by
rapid and complete
recovery. You may feel
lightheaded or dizzy before
fainting.

Causes of fainting.

Fainting may occur while you

are urinating, having a bowel
movement (especially if
straining), coughing strenuously,
or when you have been standing
in one place too long. Fainting
can also be related to fear,
severe pain, or emotional
distress.

A sudden drop in blood pressure

can cause you to faint. This may
happen if you are bleeding or
severely dehydrated. It can also
happen if you stand up very
suddenly from a lying position.

Certain medications may lead to

fainting by causing a drop in
your blood pressure or for
another reason. Common drugs

80
that contribute to fainting include
those used for anxiety, high
blood pressure, nasal
congestion, and allergies.

Other reasons you may faint

include hyperventilation, use of
alcohol or drugs, or low blood
sugar.

Less common but more serious

reasons include heart disease
(like abnormal heart rhythm or
heart attack) and stroke.

Fainting First Aid Techniques

and Advice:

Fainting occurs when someone

temporarily loses consciousness
from a deficiency in the blood
supply to the brain, often
following a sudden drop in blood
pressure. Signs of someone
about to faint include a feeling of
giddiness or dizziness. However,
the victim may suddenly
collapse. Knowing the proper
first aid for fainting may save a
life.

Fainting can occur from many

causes. Even though many
causes are relatively minor,
fainting can be a sign of an
underlying illness. If the victim
has not regained consciousness
within a few minutes and fully
recovered within 15 minutes, get
medical help and treat for
unconsciousness. See
Unconsciousness Treatment.

If the victim has fainted for

longer than 10 minutes, its
cause may be an underlying
illness. The victim should be
advised to seek medical advice

occurs from an inadequate ___unmet
blood supply to the brain, the
primary objective is to restore an
adequate blood supply to the
victim's brain. If the victim is
conscious, find out if the victim is
diabetic. If the person is
diabetic, give the person sugar
or any sugar containing
substance (artificial sweeteners
will not help).

There are some noticeable

symptoms before a faint occurs,
unless the victim suddenly
collapses. Such symptoms
include unsteadiness, giddiness,
facial perspiration, the skin
becoming cold or clammy, the
pulse weakens and is erratic,
and the person may feel
nausea. If someone exhibits
these symptoms and appears to
be about to faint, place the
person in a lying position where
fresh air is flowing. Loosen any
clothing around the person's
neck and waist. Treat the victim
for any injuries that occurred
from a faint. If there is no injury,
place the victim in the recovery
position.

When the victim regains

consciousness, do not let the
victim stand up immediately.
Gradually put the victim in a
sitting position and allow the
victim to take sips of water.

Putting the victim in Recovery

Position:

First lay the victim face-up on

the ground. If the victim is
breathing, loosen clothing

around the neck and waist. If the
victim is not breathing, begin
artificial respiration. Place the
victim's arms beside the body.
Turn the victim's head toward
the right side so their airway is
open. Treat any injury suffered
during the faint.

To begin putting the victim in

recovery position, tuck the right
arm under the victim's buttock.
Place the victim's left arm across
the chest. Bend the victim's left
leg at the knee and cross the leg
over the right leg so that the
thigh makes a right angle with
the body. Gently pull the victim's
right arm under the body.

Kneel at the victim's right side.

Place your hands on the victim's
left thigh and shoulder. Gently
pull the victim towards you so
that he or she is lying on their
side. Make sure the victim's air
passage is unobstructed
throughout the procedure. If the
