“Dia das Bruxas” / Halloween

English classes – Activities’ description

19th to 21st October

Hall ween is coming...
Task 1
Preparation time: 2 classes ARE YOU READY?
Product: Poster to exhibit in the final Halloween exhibition (you can use Canva or any other digital
tool you know)

Procedure:
• You will work in groups of 3 or 4.
• Before you start creating your poster, you must plan it. This involves selecting the information
you want to include (research is essential), the way you want to display that information and,
finally, the visual/artistic layout of your poster. If you use Canva, there are many templates
available and you can choose one of them. We will work in the ICT room.
• Each group will be assigned a subtopic from the ones below:

1. Halloween history
2. Halloween traditions Where do fashionable
3. Funny Halloween food/dishes ghosts shop?
4. Fun facts about Halloween (max. 3 facts)
5. Halloween in the UK
6. Halloween in the USA
7. Halloween around the world (max. 2/3 aspects to focus on)
8. Halloween jokes and riddles
9. Most iconic Halloween songs and/or films
10. Most creative Halloween costumes ever
NOTE: Be aware that your suggestions are always welcome and if you want to work on any
other subtopic you find interesting, but that is not on this list, you can always give
wings to your imagination… All you must do is tell your teacher about it!

• You should create your poster and send it to your teacher’s email. It will be printed in A3
format to hang in the final Halloween exhibition.

Task 2

You know kids all ages like Halloween. I know you do! Would you
like to spend some time with the younger ones (3rd and 4th graders)
and have some funny Halloween moments? Here’s your chance to
be Professor Dumbledore or Professor McGonagall for some
minutes! You will love playing the role of a teacher and your young
colleagues will surely love having you as a teacher!

Preparation time: 2 or 3 classes

Product: Funny and engaging activity to present to 3rd and 4th graders
about Halloween*

Activity presentation to 3rd and 4th graders: from 24th to 31st October

Duration of the activity: 30-40 minutes

Procedure:

• A group of 5/6 students will work on this task while the rest of the class is working on the
posters.
• First you have to brainstorm and come up with different ideas of activities/resources you can
do with kids aged 8 to 10 and whose main objective is to teach Halloween vocabulary: memory
games; bingo; word searches; crosswords; flashcard games; songs; film excerpts/trailers;
PowerPoint® activities; quizzes; Halloween stories…
• Then you must do some research and tell your teacher which material(s) you’re going to need
(e.g. cardboard, photocopies, flashcards, etc…) so that the next class you or your teacher can
bring it to class.
• The activities must be well-planned and divided among the group members so that you can
put it into practice in an effective way when teaching the younger ones.

*NOTE: If you can easily go to 3rd and 4th graders’ classrooms during their English lesson, it will be
fantastic, and you will have the opportunity to teach them face-to-face.
If that’s not the case, you can:
• Record a video of you “teaching” the younger ones fun stuff and vocabulary on
Halloween and send it to your teacher until 24th October. Your teacher will send it to the
primary kids’ English teacher. Don’t forget that if you send a video, the activities you
choose to do must all be interactive!
• Visit 5th or 6th grade classes and teach these younger colleagues. Don’t forget to adjust
your activity to the age of your schoolmates!

24th to 31st October

Duration: 2 classes

During this week, the 5/6 students that prepared the

activity to teach 3rd and 4th graders about Halloween
are going to “teach” their lesson, according to the
classes’ timetables (if the lesson is face-to-face). If
you send a video to show in their classes, you must
send it to your teacher by 24th October! Don’t forget!

NOTE: You should take the masks you created in

your arts classes to show your fellow younger
schoolmates (in the case of a face-to-face
presentation) or you should show the masks to
your little schoolmates in the video if you opt for
doing it this way.

In the English classes, the groups that were assigned the posters on Halloween must finish any
final details. You must send the posters to your teacher by 28th October, as they are going to be
exhibited on 2nd November (exhibition date) together with the masks you created in the arts classes.

During this week, in the English classes, you will also be asked to write short descriptions of your
own masks on a piece of coloured paper that will accompany your masks in the exhibition. Your
teacher will help you in class!

2nd November (exhibition)

SAVE THE DATE ON YOUR

HORRIFIC AGENDA!!!

It’s going to be a great Halloween!

I can feel it in my bones!!
