Mhlengi Gender Based Violence Center
Mhlengi Gender Based Violence Center
Purpose
The purpose of the Mhlengi GBV center is to create a haven for victims and ensure that
they receive the requisite attention and support they need to deal with and overcome
their ordeal. And for the NPO to attend to GBV victims in a respectful manner and
prevent further victimization. At the center victims will be attended to and will not have to
be taken from pillar to post for different things to be done. The center will be located in a
friendly environment away from a hospital, police station, social worker’s office or court
so that victims can feel comfortable while reporting on their cases.
Vision
The Mhlengi GBV center is a private non-profit organization located in Stanger,
KwaZulu-Natal. Founded in 2023 by a group of ladies that have experienced the
difficulties in reporting a GBV case at the police station. The ladies experienced dis-
respect and were not taken seriously when reporting, making them uncomfortable in
explaining what happened as there are many people at the front desk listening to their
story.
Mhlengi GBV center have done a survey and results obtained was that many victims
don’t report their cases of rape, sexual assault, domestic abuse etc. because they fear
being further victimized. Therefore, the center saw a gap and we took the initiative to
close the gap by ensuring that we handle the victim and her case appropriately thereby
causing her minimum or no further victimization.
Currently in South Africa (July 2023) we have a total of 11855 GBV cases reported,
From April to June 2023, 855 women and 243 children were killed. In the same period
9516 rape cases were opened with the South African Police Service (SAPS).
Selected forms of gender-based violence
There are various forms of GBV, but the Mhlengi GBV center will be assisting victims
who are being affected by Domestic, physical, femicide and sexual violence.
Domestic violence
Domestic violence is the most common form of GBV among partners. It often involves
physical violence or threats of violence. This kind of violence may also involve sexual
assault, battery, coercion and sexual harassment (Sigsworth 2009; Tshwaranang Legal
Centre 2012).
Physical violence
This form of GBV involves hitting, slapping, kicking, punching, pushing and so forth.
Weapons such as knives and other sharp instruments are often used during physical
violence (Sigsworth 2009; Tshwaranang Legal Centre 2012).
Emotional violence
Emotional violence often involves verbal abuse, name calling and belittling of the other.
It entails acts of embarrassment, humiliation and disrespect. These acts affect one’s
sense of self, self-esteem and self- confidence (Ludsin & Vetten 2005).
Economic violence
This includes control of a partner’s assets, access to money and other economic
resources. The male partner may be reluctant for his female partner to work or may
manage and abuse her payment for work done (Ludsin & Vetten 2005).
Sexual violence
This is the most common form of GBV and may involve rape, sexual harassment,
sexual exploitation and trafficking for sexual purposes (Mathews 2010; Vetten 2003).
Femicide
This is characterized by the murder of a female partner by an intimate male partner and
is considered to be the most extreme outcome of GBV (Mathews 2010; Vetten 2005).
