THE NEED FOR GREEN BUILDINGS
BACKGROUND: GLOBAL OUTLOOK FOR ENERGY AND WATER
Energy Outlook for 2035 Global water consumption has grown at more than
• Energy consumption will grow by 37% twice the rate of population increase in the last
century.
• 96% of growth will occur in developing countries
In developing countries this will increase by
another 50% by 2025.

There will be a 100% increase in the population of Water Outlook for 2025
developing countries by 2050. • 1.8 billion people will suffer absolute water scarcity
Emerging markets are in the midst of a construction • 2/3 of the population will have water stress

efficiency, energy efficiency, waste management, indoor air quality, sustainable transport, etc. However, EDGE focuses on
resource efficiency and carbon emission reduction

QUANTITATIVE APPROACH EDGE uses projected performance for a uniquely measurable approach.

ONE-STOP SHOP Efficiency simulations are executed in EDGE and the entire certification process can be
conducted within the software.

PROJECT INTEGRATION Certification compliance can be achieved with invoices, photos and a few
architectural drawings.

LOCATION-SPECIFIC EDGE has climate and lifestyle data for the most accurate results.

GREEN BUILDINGS FOR ALL Fast and affordable, EDGE makes certification available for everyone.

EDGE METHODOLOGY
BASE CASE VS. IMPROVED CASE BUILDING

The EDGE software compares an improved

(project-specific) case relative to a local base case:

❑ % reduction in energy consumption;
❑ % reduction in water consumption;
❑ % reduction in embodied energy in materials;
❑ utilities cost savings relative to base case.

Energy use for the base case in each city* is based on

current building practices or local building code if enforced.
*If the city does not exist in the EDGE App, select the closest city to the project location and edit the climate data if necessary.

Energy and Water, and Energy and Materials measures are inter-related. For example,
reduction in hot water use will reduce the energy used to produce hot water. A change

is specified by the user.

THERMAL CALCULATIONS & VIRTUAL ENERGY
_____
An important concept in EDGE is that of virtual energy. It appears when a cooling or heating system is not installed in the building. Virtual
energy is the amount of energy that would be used to reach defined comfort conditions should air-conditioning and heating be installed in the
future. Virtual energy will be shown as energy savings, however it does not contribute savings to utility bill calculations in the EDGE software.

Dynamic Simulation • Quick and cheaper assessments
• Increases scalability
• Hour by hour • More accurate
simulation • Complicated

EDGE uses a monthly quasi-steady-state calculation method based on the European CEN and ISO 13790 standards to
assess annual energy use for the space heating and cooling of the building.

v. 3.0 Published Dec 2022 42

EDGE METHODOLOGY
BASE CASE WILL CHANGE OVER TIME
The EDGE base case is based on local standard practices and codes. Local_____
baselines are periodically updated to reflect changes in construction practices
relating to energy, water and materials. So, a building that passes the EDGE standard in 2020 may fail in 2025 if local construction improves.

property, making it less emissive (reducing
its ability to radiate). This can be used to
either keep heat inside or outside depending
on the location of the low-E coating.

Low-E coating reduces the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient

solar radiation to heat carrier fluid (i.e., water).
▪ EDGE uses the percent of hot water demand met by
the solar system.

❑ Typically, are solar PV, solar water heaters or ❑ The building should demonstrate how energy is
small-scale wind or hydroelectric power supplied to the EDGE project
❑ Only can be claimed for zero carbon certification after
