General instructions: Unless otherwise specified, take time in hours, energy in Joules,

power in Watts, voltage in Volts and current in Amperes, charge in Coulombs,Resistance

in ohms. Also truncate the final values of the required quantities to two decimal places.

1. Calculate the power rating (in W) of a heater coil when connected to a 220V power
supply drawing 5A current.

Solution

Voltage, V = 220V and current, I = 5A

Power, P = V × I = 220 × 5 = 1100W

2. How much power (in W) would be dissipated as heat when 0.2A of current flows through
a 100 ohm resistor?

Solution

P = V × I = (I × R) × I = I2R = 0.2 × 0.2 × 100 = 4W

3. How much energy(in Wh) is delivered by a device that draws 1.5A current from a 12V
battery for 2 hours?

Solution

Energy = Power × Time,

P = V × I. Therefore, energy = V × I × t = 12 × 1.5 × 2 = 36 Wh.

4. Murali bought a bulb on which was written ‘220V, 60W’. Help him to find out its
resistance (in ohms) and also the current (in A) flowing through it.

Current, I=60/220=0.27 A
Power=V2/R from which
R=806.67ohms.

5. Which of the following is wrong?

a) 1 Newton / Coulomb = 1 Volt / meter
b) 1 ampere × 1 Ohm = 1 Volt
c) 1 Watt × 1 sec = 1 Joule
d) 1 Coulomb × 1 Volt = 1 Watt
Solution

d)

6. A heating element receives 2.7kW of power with 220V supply. Assuming the resistance
to be a constant, calculate the current (in A) in the heating element.

Solution

Current=2.7kW / 220V = 12.27A.

7. Your friend is using a 30kWh, 250V battery for his work. Help him to find its rating in
Ampere hours.

Solution

Battery rating = 30kWh / 250V = 120Ah.

8. An 1.2V, 1500mAh Nickel metal hydride battery provides a constant current of 600mA.
How long(in hours) would the battery last?

Solution

The battery would last for 1500 / 600 = 2.5 hours.

9. A radio set draws a current of 0.25A for 12 minutes. Calculate the amount of electric
charge (in Coulombs) that flows through its internal circuitry.

Solution

Given, current, I = 0.25A

Time duration, t = 12 min = 720s

Q = I × t = 0.25 × 720 = 180C

10. An electric heater is connected to the 220V mains supply. A current of 6A flows through
the heater.
a) How much charge (in Coulombs) flows around the circuit each second?
b) How much energy (in Joules) is transferred to the heater each second?
Solution

Given that,
Potential difference = 220V
Current, I = 6A
Time duration, t = 1s

a) I = Q/t
Therefore, Q = I × t = 6 × 1 = 6C
b) We know that energy transferred = work done
Also, potential difference = work done/charge moved
Therefore, work done = potential difference × charge moved = 220 × 6 = 1320J

11. An onshore wind turbine has a capacity of 2 megawatts (MW).

Calculate the energy transferred (in MJ) in 1s.

Solution

Given that,
Power, P = 2MW = 2 X106 Watts (Mega is 106)

Energy = Pxt = 2 X106 x 1 Watts-sec or 2 X106 J =2MJ.

12. A 2915 mAh battery and a 1100 mAh battery both charge from 35% to 40% by the same
charging source.Calculate the ratio of the time taken by the two batteries to charge.
If the charger current is I
IX t1=5% of 2915mAh=145.75mAh.
IXt2=5% of 1100mAh=55mAh
t1/t2=2.65
