Geography - The Mediterranean Region

Mediterranean Sea

Mediterranean Sea, is the inland sea of Europe, Asia, and Africa, linked to the
Atlantic Ocean at its western end by the Strait of Gibraltar. Known to the
Romans as Mare Nostrum (our sea), the Mediterranean is almost landlocked.

The Mediterranean Sea covers an area of 2,509,000 sq km. It measures 3,900


km from west to east and is 1,600 km at its maximum from north to south. It is
generally shallow, with an average depth of 1,500 m; it reaches a maximum
depth of 5,150 m off the southern coast of Greece.

Important islands include Malta and Cyprus which are countries. There are other
important islands that belong to other countries. Barcelona, Marseille, Genoa,
Patras, and Alexandria are important seaports in the region. Major rivers
entering the Mediterranean are the Ebro, Rhône, Po, and Nile.
