LEARNING MODULE IN

ORAL COMMUNICATION IN CONTEXT

MODULE 8

As a social being, people always find themselves in a situation that allows them to communicate. This
situation may be in a one-on-one discussion, a group conversation, or public speaking. Therefore, as we
communicate, we must consider the time and place of communication that may affect the speech we deliver
and the process of understanding. It is important that we, as communicators, understand the environmental
and situational context of communication.
In this module, you will learn about the four types of speech context that may define your ability to
communicate and help you become an effective communicator.

Concept Notes:
TYPES OF SPEECH CONTEXT
Speech Context refers to a situation or environment that brings people to a conversation or a
speaking event. This involves a particular time and place of communication. It also includes the shared
understanding of the communicators on the topic of communication. Speech context may also be classified
into different types:
1. Intrapersonal Communication – This type of speech context is conversing with your inner self by
thinking.
2. Interpersonal Communication – This type of speech context involves communication with other
people, which may take place face-to-face or through social or new media like video conference, chat
room, e-mail, etc.
Dynamics of Interpersonal Communication
a. Dyad – It is a one-on-one communication or communication between two people.
b. Small Group – It is a communication that involves three up to twenty people wherein people exchange
and evaluate ideas to achieve a common and desired goal.
3. Public Communication – It is also known as speaker-audience communication that involves addressing
a large audience.
4. Mass Communication – It refers to the use of mass media, including digital media and new media or
social media, to reach a larger audience spread out in different places at the same time.
