4 Causes of Family Conflict

Family harmony provides a sense of belonging and a feeling of security unlike many other
types of relationships. When conflict arises, it threatens that security. Whether the disharmony
initiates from within the family unit or from external sources, individual family members and the
family as a whole can experience a range of negative emotions and consequences. Unresolved
conflict may irreparably damage a marriage and the entire family if family members do not seek
help.
One major source of family conflict is within the area of finances--specifically, the lack of
enough money to pay bills, maintain the mortgage or rent, buy sufficient food and other necessities
and have any remaining money for recreation, job or career may contribute to conflict within a
family. If a parent’s job keeps him away from home most of the time, the spouse at home with the
children often feels neglected or overwhelmed. Conversely, if the parent becomes unemployed,
this causes its own form of stress and conflict, as finances dwindle, and uncertainty sets in about
the future.
Another cause of family conflict is the inevitable rivalry that occurs between siblings.
Children typically seek their parents’ attention and approval, even if this requires tattling on, or
sometimes causing harm to, a sibling. Whether a child expresses jealousy of her sibling, competes
with him or teases him non-stop, it is destined to cause conflict. Each child deserves an equal
amount of parental love and acceptance, yet sometimes a parent may favor one child over
another. This merely intensifies the conflict.

While mutual agreement on the subject of child discipline is crucial, the lack of consensus opens up
another potential area for family conflict. If one parent acts as the “disciplinarian,” the other parent
typically becomes the “consoler” to whom the children turn -- this often pits one parent against the
other.
Jokes and movies abound regarding conflict with in-laws (especially mothers-in-law); however,
when you actually become involved in disagreements with your in-laws or extended family, it is no
laughing matter. While it is preferable to respect your elders--parents and grandparents on both sides
equally--this can prove to be challenging. If relatives routinely interfere in your family’s decisions and
lifestyle, conflict frequently results.

Topic Title: How to Distinguish Technical from Operational Definition

Academic writers define terms so that their readers understand exactly what they mean when they
use certain key terms. When important words are not exactly understood, misinterpretation may result,
for words can mean different things at different times.

The purpose of definition is to clarify meaning. It should be objective to achieve clarity, brevity, and
conciseness in writing.

What is a technical definition?

According to Donna M. Hughes, technical definition is the definition found in the dictionary.
It is a statement or explanation which gives the exact definition of a term. It is used to introduce the
vocabulary which makes communication in a particular field evident, clear and understandable.

Guidelines in Writing Technical Definitions

1. Be accurate – Use precise terms.
2. Be objective – Use facts and not opinions.
3. Use the right level of detail – Think how much information your audience needs.
4. Grade your language – Match the knowledge level of your audience.
5. Avoid circular definitions - It cannot provide any useful information, since it uses the term
being defined as part of its own definition.
Types of Technical Definition

• Parenthetical Definitions – used to define a simpler term with a short description enclosed in
parenthesis immediately after the term.

Example: Telephone (telecommunication device) permits two or more users to conduct a

conversation when they are too far apart to be heard directly.

• Sentence Definitions – used to define more complex terms in a couple of sentences.

Example: The telephone is an instrument designed for the simultaneous transmission and
reception of human voice. It transmits sounds between two distant points.

• Expanded Definition – used to define terms with a very detailed explanation using examples
and visuals.

Example: The telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell. It is a system used to
send speech or data over distances that functions as the transmitter and receiver. A
telephone is simple to operate and offers its users an immediate personal type of
communication.

What is an operational definition?

Meanwhile, Steve Vincent, defines operational definition as the specific meaning of a word or phrase
given to it by the group of people who use the word in their specific context.

A technical definition is a definition in the technical sense or the definition from the dictionary,
while an operational definition includes information from the real world.
A technical definition is taken from the dictionary and encyclopedia, while in an operational
definition the meaning of terms is based on an observed characteristic/s and how it is used in a study.
