Q.1 (a) Define the following terms: (a) Stagnation temperature (c) Isothermal 03

(b) Define critical state? Calculate the ratio of stagnation density to critical 04
density for mono atomic ideal gas.

dynamics.

(c) The air with mach number 0.3, stagnation pressure 6 bars and 07
stagnation temperature 350 K enters into a thermally insulated duct of
constant diameter 10 cm. If the duct operates under choking condition,
determine the length of duct, flow parameters at duct exit and mass
flow rate. Take the mean friction coefficient for the duct as 0.004.

(b) Explain the phenomenon of choking in isentropic flow. 04
(c) A Conical diffuser has entry and exit diameter of 15 cm and 30 cm 07
respectively. The Pressure, temperature and velocity of air at entry are
0.69 bar, 340 K and 180 m/s. respectively. Assume : Isentropic flow -
γ = 1.4, Cp = 1.00 KJ/Kg.K

Determine: (a) the exit pressure (b) the exit velocity and (c) the force
exerted on diffuser walls.

(b) Differentiate between adiabatic and diabatic flow. 04
(c) The velocity of a normal shock wave moving into stagnant air (p =1.0 07
bar and t = 17 °C) is 500 m/s. If the area of cross section of the duct is
constant, determine (a) pressure, (b) temperature, (c) velocity of air, (d)
stagnation temperature and (e) the Mach number imparted upstream of
the wave front.
