Introduction
In this lab, you will perform several ASTM Standard tests on asphalt cement to characterize
their properties including flash point, viscosity and ductility. These properties are key to proper
selection and use of asphalt cement in various construction applications.

Instructions
1. The laboratory report will be completed as a group.
2. The laboratory report will describe, present, and discuss the results and grade of asphaltic
cement according to ASTM standards.
 Flash Point, ASTM D92
 Viscosity, ASTM D2170/AASHTO T201 (Kinematic Viscosity)
 Viscosity, ASTM D2171/AASHTO T202 (Absolute Viscosity)
 Thin Film Oven Test, ASTM D1754
 Penetration Test 25 °C, ASTM D5/ AASHTO T49
 Ductility Test, ASTM D 113
3. It should include, at minimum, the following sections:
a. Title Page
b. Table of Contents
c. Introduction and Objectives of the lab
d. Brief description of the experiments conducted in lab
e. Results of all the experiments conducted in the lab
f. Discussion/ Analysis
g. Appendices and References
4. The format for the body of the report should be:
 Font should be 11 pt.
 Line spacing should be no greater than 1.5.
 Margins should be 25 mm on all sides.
 Tables, figures and photos are to be placed in the text where appropriate.
 Raw data may be included in the appendices.
 Figures and tables should be included in the text, as appropriate. Table titles go
above the table, figure captions go below the figures. Do not break tables over a
page. Be consistent in your referencing style.
