Motivation
Look to your left and your right and look at what people are holding. Is it LG K Series or
Samsung Galaxy? Mostly, it will be Samsung smartphones. Despite the lower price, Korean
people are rarely found using LG smartphones. According to StatCounter Global Stats, the
highest mobile vendor market share in South Korea from June 2022 to June 2023 is Samsung. I
noticed this firsthand when I spend my time in Seoul as an exchange student in 2023. Samsung Z
flip, Samsung Galaxy A Series, and S series were easily seen on the streets in just 5 minutes of
walking around the city. On the contrary, this is not the case in Indonesia. Based on the statistic
published by Statista Research Department, the highest market share of leading mobile vendors
across Indonesia as of July 2023 is Oppo. And in second place is Samsung. Indonesians choose
Oppo over Samsung due to its low price. The great difference between the two societies in how
they judge and decide what to buy intrigues me to know more about the psychological, cultural,
social, and personal factors that affect consumer behavior. How industries understand the
customers and apply a suitable strategy on how to make an emotional connection with the
customer could be the key to Samsung big market share in South Korea.

Look to your left and your right and ask a Korean, how many branded items do they have.
Mostly, they’ll have around five to ten items or more. If you asked a group of Indonesians the
same question, the number will be less than five or none at all. According to an article by Jakarta
Post published in 2021, Indonesian rather buy cheap local products or premium quality
counterfeit items than buy from luxury brands. This is so far apart from South Korea which was
mentioned in a CNBC news article published in 2023 as the world’s biggest spenders on luxury
goods. I noticed this contrast firsthand when I spend my time in Seoul as an exchange student.
Dior, Chanel, and Louis Vuitton goods were easily seen on the streets just 5 minutes of walking
around the city. The great difference between the two societies in how they judge and decide
what to buy intrigues me to know more about the psychological, cultural, social, and personal
factors that affect consumer behavior. By analyzing the differences, understanding the customers,
and applying the suitable strategy on how to make an emotional connection with the customer, I
believe Indonesia can also developed its’ big potential in the luxury market that’s projected to
grow by 3.73% with a market volume of US$2.087 million by 2028 and say goodbye to the
imitation culture (Statista Market Forecast, 2023). To achieved it, a study in social psychology is
crucial.

My Journey in International Education

During my time at National Taiwan University of Science and Technology studying Applied
Foreign Languages, I took courses around international business and marketing. The course I
enjoyed the most was Advertisement class where we learn...
When I went to Seoul in 2023 as an exchange student at Konkuk University, I took World of
English course where I got a brief introduction to Product Naming. We delved into…

Significant Experiences
I utilize social media frequently, especially TikTok. When I use TikTok, I frequently see
that many imported Chinese products are presented in an intriguing and engaging style that can
entice many users to buy them, especially when supported by their low selling prices. Izzudin Al
Farras, a researcher at the Institute for Development of Economics and Finance's Center for
Digital Economy and SMEs, demonstrated the perils of social commerce through TikTok's
Project S. Farras claimed that if TikTok's Project S, which is being developed in England, is
adopted in Indonesia, it will eliminate the local MSME company.

In fact, MSMEs have been the national economy's backbone. It should be mentioned that
the contribution of MSMEs to GDP reached 61.07 percent, or IDR 8,574 trillion, in 2021.
Recognizing this experience, I believe that Indonesian MSMEs are frequently unable to compete
owing to higher prices when compared to imported items. Actually, if the price is accompanied
with good quality, the high price is not an issue. However, because Indonesian customers prefer
low-cost goods, MSMEs must devise a unique promotion technique to pique consumer attention.
As a result, I want to study in South Korea to learn about the most recent marketing strategy
based on consumer behavior.
