(Indicator diagram/PV diagrams, cyclic and non-cyclic process)

Q. One mole of ideal gas undergoes a cyclic process ABCD where the (P,V) co-ordinates are A(5,1),
B(5,3), C(2,3)and D(2,1). Calculate the work done along AB, BC, CD and DA and also net work
done in the process.

3. Heat, work Energy

4. First law of thermodynamics (dQ=dU+PdV)
Q. At 0 0C and normal atmospheric pressure, the volume of 1g of water increases from 1 cm 3 to
1.091cm3 on freezing. What will be the change in its internal energy?( At. Pressure is 1.013 x 105 Nm-2
latent heat of melting of ice= 80 cal g-1.

Q. A metal of mass 1 kg at constant atmospheric pressure and at initial temperature of 20 0C is

given a heat of 2000 J. Find the change in temperature , work done and change in internal energy.

5. Adiabatic process
Q. Calculate the fall in the temperature of helium initially at 15 0C , when it is suddenly expanded
to 8 times its volume. Given ( Cp/Cv = 5/3)

6. 2nd law of thermodynamics

7. Irreversible Process
8. Specific heat (Mayer’s formula )

Q. An ideal gas is taken through the cycle A- B- C—A, as shown in fig. If the net heat supplied to
the gas is 5J . what is the work done by the gas in the process C-A?

Q. Gases have two specific heats, but solids and liquids possess only one specific heat. why?
Q. The difference between two specific heats of a gas is 5000 Jkg-1 K-1 and the ration of specific
heats is 1.6. Find the two specific heats.

Q. An ideal gas has a specific heat at a constant pressure Cp = (5/2)R. The gas is kept in a closed
vessel of volume 0.0083 m3 at a temperature of 300 K and a pressure of 1.6 x 106 Nm-2 . Calculate the
final temperature and the pressure of the gas.

Q. Calculate the ration of specific heats for nitrogen, given that specific heats at constant pressure
is 0.236 cal g-1 K-1 and the density at S.T.P is 0.001234g cm-3 .
