the center of debate by a famous article
by Lynn White Jr. in 1967.1
White held, correctly, that what peo-
ple do about their environment depends
on their beliefs about their nature and their identity, and in
the Western world, these were shaped to a great degree by
the Bible. Specifically, White traced the human exploitation of

animals as well as food for human beings. The trees are for
birds to build their nests, the high mountains are for the wild
goats, the rocks for the rabbits (Psalm 104:15–18). Darkness
allows the animals of the forest to come creeping out. God
puts Job in his place by asking whether he knows when the
mountain goats give birth, or can observe the calving of the
deer (Job 39:1). Throughout the book, Job assumes that God
should be preoccupied with the fate of human beings, even
specifically with Job and his family. The speeches from the
whirlwind shunt that assumption aside. God has many more,
and more important, things on his mind.20 Some of the hymns
in the Psalms (e.g., Psalm 148) call on the elements of nature
to praise God;21 indeed, Job 38:7 says that the morning stars
sang together at the foundation of the earth. It may be argued
that snow and rain and mountains and hills praise God just
by their existence22 or, inversely, that their existence is reason
to praise God. Again, in modern parlance, these passages af-
firm the intrinsic worth of nature, quite apart from its utility
for humanity.
Neither the psalm nor the Book of Job offers a romantic
view of creation. The psalm notes that young lions roar for

their prey, and God gives them food. This is nice for the lions,
not so nice for their prey. Job notes that the eagle and hawk
swoop for their prey (39:26–29). In this universe birds and ani-
mals eat each other to survive. Humanity is at the top of the
food chain but can still be vulnerable to other species on occa-
sion. Eating one another does not mean that there is conscious
warfare between species. Rather, creation is an ecosystem
where things balance out; the whole is greater than its constitu-
ent parts. In a world so constituted, human dominion is rather

too, would depend on the land, and preserving it for them was
important.
The Priestly Laws in Leviticus 25 lose sight of the practi-
cal rationale for crop rotation. They call for a Sabbath of
complete rest for the whole land in the seventh year, during
which people and animals alike live off whatever the land
yields of itself. Moreover, they provide for a jubilee in the
fiftieth year, when the land must lie fallow for two consecutive
years. The obvious question, what shall we eat?, is answered
blithely by the assurance that the Lord would order a blessing
in the sixth year so that the land would provide a crop for
three years. It is doubtful that this assurance was ever tested
in practice. Leviticus insists that the land is the Lord’s (25:23).
Not only do people not have a license to exploit the land, they
do not even own it. Here again the idea of stewardship seems
apt: the people manage the land on God’s behalf. However
impractical the system of Leviticus may seem, it has a clear
message of restraint in the use of the land.
Deuteronomy does not provide its own version of the
sabbatical year. Perhaps it assumes the law of the Book of the
Covenant. Still, it provides several examples of the need for

what the sabbatical laws were all about. The earth was a re-
newable resource; it had to be treated with care. The key to
the appreciation of nature in the Hebrew Bible is the convic-
tion that this world is not passing away and that human beings
must live in harmony with it.

society. Some of the miracles are ambiguous. Stories of the
calming of the storm (Mark 4:35–41), the destruction of the
Gerasene swine (Mark 5:11–13; Luke 8:32–3), and the withering
of the fig tree (Mark 11:12–13, 20–21; Matthew 21:18–20) dem-
onstrate dominion over nature even if these stories are sym-
bolic and do not reflect real actions.30 Even the sayings about
the birds of the air and the lilies of the field are anthropocen-
tric; the ultimate concern is with the fate of human beings.
Jesus lived in an agrarian society and made many of the as-
sumptions we have seen in the Hebrew Bible. He drew illus-
trations from the world around him, which was primarily the
world of rural Galilee. But nature as such is not a primary
focus of the teaching of Jesus, any more than it was of the He-
brew prophets. Perhaps the main import of the teaching of
Jesus for ecology is that it promotes a human lifestyle that is
not acquisitive and, in doing so, runs counter to the ethos of
modern society that is the root cause of exploitation of the en-
vironment. The implications of the Gospels for ecology, then,
are indirect but not insignificant.

its own will but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope
that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to de-
cay and will obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of
God. We know that the whole creation has been groaning in
labor pains until now; and not only the creation, but we our-
selves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly
while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies.

Lord fills the world and holds all things together. Even the
natural world, then, is animated by a divine spirit.
Early Christians identified Christ with this spirit, most
notably in the prologue to the Gospel of John, where he is
called the Logos, or Word.
If the natural world is pervaded by a divine spirit, its sta-
tus is obviously enhanced. Throughout the Bible, creation is
the work of God. The passage in Colossians restates this in an
emphatic way. But while this statement may be taken to imply
an exalted view of creation and the natural world, it remains
quite abstract. It is not at all clear how the reconciliation of all
things to God is supposed to work. Colossians is concerned
with the exalted nature of Christ and only incidentally with
the status of the created world. Moreover, if all things are
made through Christ, the presence of evil and destructive
forces in the world remains unexplained.37 This is not to deny
that the passage in Colossians implies an exalted view of the
natural world, but its relevance to modern environmental
concerns remains remote.38

world, which is not yet awake, shall be roused, and that which
is corruptible shall perish.” Likewise, Revelation is insistent
that the old heaven and earth pass away. There is little doubt
that the writers of these texts imagined that the present world
would literally come to an end.
The end is always followed by a new beginning. There is
presumably some continuity from this world to the next, as
there is in the resurrection of the dead. But the transforma-
tion is extreme and presupposes the destruction of the old
world. Human life and the life of the natural world are inter-
twined. Humans and nature suffer a like fate. At no point do
any of these texts suggest that human beings may exploit or
ravage the earth with impunity, but neither do they provide
strong motivation for tending it or preserving it. As David
Horrell concludes, the biblical texts, especially the New Tes-
tament, “leave us with an uncertain and ambivalent legacy
when it comes to the possible contribution of their future vi-
sions to theological and ethical views of the environment.”41
But while there is little doubt that the authors of Revela-
tion and 2 Peter believed quite literally that the physical de-
struction of the world was imminent, we cannot take these

it. (The demise of the sea in Revelation 21:1 is due to its sym-
bolic, mythological significance, not to any ecological con-
cern.) Revelation does not suggest that the envisioned world
can be brought about by human endeavor. Insofar as it is a
hoped-for ideal, however, we might reasonably be expected to
strive toward it.
