INGLESE: CHARLIE CHAPLIN

Charlie Chaplin was a British actor who became a big star in the
silent film era in the first decades of the 20th century. Chaplin was
the first person to control every aspect of the film makes process.
He founded his own studio, united artist, with other actors and
actress. He produced, directed, wrote and edited the films he
starred in. He also composed the music for many of his films, for
example the song smile, which wrote for modern times. Charlie
Chaplin was born in London, England on April 16th 1889. Both his
parents were actors, but his father left home when Charlie was
10 years old and this made it necessary for charlie and his
brother, Sydney, to look after themselves. He started working as
an actor very early at the age of 14, until he left for America.
There he joined the Karno pantonimime troupe, and toured with
them or six years. His first film was Making a Living (1913), but
his first great success was The Tramp in 1915 in which the
protagonist is a kind- hearted and dreamy man. In 1916 (his third
year in films), his salary of 10.000$ a week made him the highest-
paid actor in the world. During the 1920s Chaplin’s career
blossomed even more. In the Thirties, Chaplin produced famous
interesting and engaging films such a City Lights and Modern
Times. This was one of his most famous films, containing a biting
commentary about the contemporary world. But maybe the most
famous of Chaplin’s films is The Great Dictator of 1940, in which
he plays a caricature version of Adolf Hitler. In the fifties, Chaplin
was accused of being a communist by senator McCarthy. A file
was produced that contained details of his subversive political
activities since 1922. Therefore Chaplin left the states and settled
in Switzerland. In 1964, he published his first autobiography,
called My autobiography, which was followed by My Life in
pictures in 1974. He was allowed to return in the US in 1972 to
receive an Oscar for his services to the cinema. He died in 1977 in
Switzerland aged 88 from natural causes.
