FRUGAL ERA

1 - War conditions necessitated civilian rationing of clothing and certain foodstuffs in Australia. The main reasons for clothing
rationing were the serious falling off in imports, increased Service demands, and reduced labour for local production of textiles
and making up of garments.

1940S FASHION

Fashion in the 1940s

1940s fashion in Britain was, of course, hugely influenced by the Second World War, which broke out in
August 1939 and lasted until 1945, though clothes rationing wasn’t completely over until the 1950s with
clothes rationing ending in 1954.

In somen ways – lots of ways – the changes that women were forced to make to their ways of dressing
were hard, but in others there was a freedom and a creativity that they hadn’t seen before. Hats, gloves,
and even stockings weren’t compulsory any more, and the restrictions on fabric permanently changed
the way that twomens clothes were made and decorated, leading to much simpler and more streamlined
fashions.

2 - How is fashion influenced?

Cultural influence on fashion:

Fashion is not an isolated factor of clothing or accessories but it is connected to our life in every aspect and among them culture
is the most significant. ... Fashion is influenced by cultural changes, such as modernization, art and even technological
innovation
3 - Ever since the stock market crash of 1929 and the severe economic depression that followed for most of the 1930s, fashion
had been an escape. Looking to the movies, women and men escaped their difficult daily lives and imagined a carefree and very
glamorous life in Hollywood. Fashion followed movie stars’ apparel both on and off the set. Bias cut dresses were modest but
feminine. Men’s wide shouldered suits mimicked the masculine physique underneath. Rich furs, white paste jewelry, and
coordinated accessories looked like a million bucks. Fashion did not reflect real life in the 1930s.0
For some sections of society, the war didn’t change anything. Some very rich people missed their twice-
yearly trips to Paris to buy couture, and other rich people might have missed checking out what was
fashionable in Paris and having their dressmakers make copies of it, but their wardrobes would have
been so well stocked that they would not have run out of clothes and rationing may not have affected
them at all. If they wanted to ring the changes and keep up with 1940s fashions, they had their
dressmaker alter existing garments.
Similarly, very poor people were, obviously, hugely un-bothered that there were no new styles coming
out of Paris, and rationing didn’t affect them in that they simply couldn’t afford new clothes anyway.
How did WWII affect fashion?
The rationing of materials used in garment production during World War II introduced a new simplicity
in women's clothing. Hemlines rose and decorative elements disappeared creating the emergence of a
classic style. b. In order to supply the war effort, fabric was rationed.Sep 22, 2017
