School Based Assessment (SBA)


Resource for students
The ELA SBA – resource for students
Students can use these prompts as a guide when preparing their SBA.
Each of the questions and explanations for the different categories are
designed to help students to understand the various sections and so
successfully complete their SBA.

ORAL PRESENTATION:

PLAN OF INVESTIGATION: Pay attention to the points in the left column. Each point must
be answered. The column on the left are examples of how you can structure your response
to get full marks.
WRITTEN REPORT
Use the following questions prompts for each category to guide your writing of the
report.

CONTENT
1. What different aspect of the theme did each group investigate?
2. Was it easy or difficult to find artefacts/pieces? Why?
3. How many artefacts/pieces did the group have?
4. How did the group decide what artefacts/pieces to choose?
5. What are the names of the three artefacts/pieces chosen?
4 marks

Evidence of Investigation

1. What did the group learn from each of the artefact/piece?

2. What was the major issue in each artefact/piece?

3. State the Title, Author and Year of each artefact/piece

3 marks

Language Use and Vocabulary

1. Grammar and Mechanics

2. Utilise vocabulary/jargon from the stimuli (artefact/piece)

3. Sentence structure and spelling are CRITICAL

3 marks
Your SBA requires that you complete THREE (3) REFLECTIONS. All requirements of
each Reflection must be met to earn full marks.

Reflection Guidelines:

1. Three reflections must be written by students


2. Reflections must be written as SEPARATE pieces
3. Each reflection must be no more than 150 words
You will lose marks if you go beyond the word limit.

REFLECTION 1
Use these guidelines to complete Reflection 1.

• Title of Artefact – write the title of the THREE (3) pieces in the introductory
paragraph of the Reflection
• Speak about each artefact separately – all three artefacts must be commented
on
• Say what was the main idea or issue in the THREE (3) selected pieces.
• Write about what you thought about the issue/topic chosen before starting the
SBA.
• Write about what new knowledge you may have gained from the 3 pieces.
REFLECTION 2
This Reflection focuses on the Language of the artefacts
Answer these questions:
1. What category did each piece fall into, for example, poem, article, song,
poster
2. What was the purpose of the piece - to persuade, to entertain, to inform?
3. What were some of the main language techniques used by the writer in each
piece?
4. How effective were the techniques?
DO NOT exceed the word limit – 150 words

REFLECTION 3
Reflection 3 requires you to write about your process in doing the SBA.
This Reflection is divided into TWO (2) PARTS.
• Part 1: Write about your experience working in a group
• Part 2: Write about your personal growth from researching topic

REFLECTION 3
Part 1: “Experience Working in a Group”
Answer these questions to complete Part 1:
• Was the group work challenging?
• How did you cope?
• Did the process allow you to grow?
• You are accustomed to working alone, how was the experience? Did it make
you more understanding?
• People may not be as prompt as you. How did you handle such issues?
• How did you contribute to the group’s experience?
• How did you handle Internet issues such as the ability to navigate Internet
journals, articles, books, music etc.
• Did it improve your self-discipline? Was there more an awareness of
Miss/Sir/the group is waiting for my input?
• How did you cope with deadlines?

Part 2: “Personal growth from researching topic”
Answer these questions to complete Part 1:
1. How was it working with people?
o Talk about your own patience and tolerance, living up to the
expectations of the group etc.

2. How did it help me as an individual/ What effect did it have on


me?
• My investigative skills were enhanced
• I was shy but working in groups my confidence grew
• I became more organised
• My speaking skills improved
• My writing skills improved

Completing your SBA is not a difficult task. If you follow the above guidelines
and those given by your teachers, you should be able to successfully complete
your SBA and go into the exam with at least 20% of your total English mark!
