Morten E. Solberg, NWS - Nov. 8, 1935 - Jan. 10, 2022. Internationally renowned artist Morten E. Solberg died Jan. 10 at
his home in Bluffton, SC, at age 86. Over his long career he received numerous honors , including election to U.S. Art
Magazine’s “Artist Hall of Fame” and the Susan K. Black Foundation “Lifetime Achievement Award.” Solberg was famed for
his unique wildlife and landscape paintings that combined realism with abstraction in multiple mediums. His paintings are
displayed in such places as the Smithsonian Institution, the National Gallery of Art and the White House. Solberg attended
the Cleveland Institute of Art at night. He was Art Director at Cleveland-based American Greetings Corp. before moving to
Southern California where he began his career as a full-time artist. Solberg was a Signature Member of NWS and a First
Vice President. (https://www.mortenesolberg.com/blog)
Beverly Lake Hoffman, NWS - My mom, Beverly Jean Lake Hoffman, passed peacefully into a new experience this past
February 16, 2022. Mom earned a fine arts degree from Principia College and was later a founding member of the Saint
Louis Watercolor Society. She was a very active supporter of contemporary art in the St. Louis area, teaching and showing
work in local galleries and shows where she received copious first place and 'best of show' awards. She was a signature
member of the National Watercolor Society, the Philadelphia Watercolor Society, and the Saint Louis Watercolor Society,
exhibiting on a national level. “Her work reflects the presence of Soul focusing on light, luminosity, and color; featuring
interlocking, invented shapes to compose a harmony of pattern and design. She contrasts hard edges with wet-on-wet
washes involving the viewer in the visual experience with a touch of humor and imagination.” (Bev Hoffman Watercolor

Joy Shott, NWS - Born 7-24-1930. Passed 12-28-21. In the mid-1960s, her interest in children's literature inspired her to
write a picture book titled, "The Little Bear with Purple Paws." In addition to writing, she decided she would like to
illustrate her own books. This led her to pursue a degree in studio art and English at Concord College in Athens, West
Virginia. Her interest in painting, particularly watercolors, led to a 40-year career as a painter and teacher, both in West
Virginia and Maine. Joy was a longtime signature member of the American Watercolor Society and the National Watercolor
Society. Over the years she won many awards in juried shows across the U.S. for her paintings of orchids and landscapes.
In 2020 one of her paintings was chosen for the catalog cover of the American Watercolor Society Annual Show.

Joe Miller, Associate member - Born on February 17th, 1939, Joe’s life was always connected in some way to the arts.
While he initially set forth to become a taxidermist with dreams of becoming a museum conservator, he eventually settled
in at UNC Chapel Hill’s School of Pharmacy. It was in practice at Boone Drug and while moonlighting as an artist that he
began a small, corner “shop” he jokingly named “Cheap Joe’s Art Stuff.” The name stuck, and Joe later left his pharmacy
career to grow Cheap Joe’s into a force in the art materials world. It was how he approached his customers (often
personally delivering packages when traveling across the U.S.). Joe’s passion and dedication to the art world earned him
numerous accolades and awards – his highest honors being the recipient of the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award,
American Watercolor Society Dolphin Medal, North Carolina Order of the Long Leaf Pine, and NWS Arts and Humanities
Award for his contributions to his extremely broad community. It is the at the request of Joe and his family that in lieu of
flowers contributions may be made to Brushes for Vincent – a charitable organization designed by Joe to give persons in
distress healing through art. (excerpts from Cheap Joe’s Art Stuff - Facebook post)
