FURNACE DUCTING SPECIFICATION

1 SAFETY INFORMATION

Careless operation will result in serious injury or death. Operators and maintenance personnel
should read and understand the operation manual prior to any operation, inspection or
maintenance.

2 EXHAUST CONFIGURATION

The following document details the specifications of the NX and NXK Furnace Hot air ducting.
Furnace hot air ducts are used during the cooling stage of the nitriding process. Cooling time
will depend on the process configuration.

Weight of the exhaust is not to be supported by the furnace. At no time should the chimney run
horizontally; if bends are required reduce losses by using 30 degree elbows. Duct flange
should match that of the unit for easy installation (Refer to Table 1 and 2 for Duct Sizes).

During the cooling stage ducting can experience temperature spikes of 150C (302F). Ducting
should be insulated double walled stainless steel for the first 3m (10 feet). This prevents any
burn hazards to the operator. A minimum wall thickness of 1.5mm (16 gauge) is
recommended. Afterwards a single walled duct should be sufficient. Ducting should have a
water guard (concentric shroud).

Please refer to local code for any further requirements.

drawings.

*If a transition from square to round ducting is made. The round ducting area must be
increased by 10%.

*For proper operation of the furnace, negative plant pressure must not occur.

3 NEGATIVE PRESSURE

Negative pressure occurs when there is a significant difference in air pressure between the
interior and exterior of the building.

In the event that the facility housing the furnace experiences negative pressure, please consult
with your local experts for recommendations.

FURNACE DUCTING SPECIFICATION

Draft Dampers may be recommended on the exterior of the building to aid in pressure
balancing. In addition to these recommendations, a draft hood should be installed downstream
from the equipment followed by an extraction fan mounted as close to the outlet as possible.

Due to the losses in the ducting, the extraction fan capacity should be capable of handling 30%
larger flow rates then the cooling blower capacity listed in tables 1 and 2 above, as well as
being able to provide a minimum of 3” SP (5.6mm HG). It is advisable that a ducting specialist
examine the extent of negative pressure you are experiencing. In some cases, a larger
extraction fan may be needed.
