What I Need to Know

Latitude and longitude are the coordinate systems that are used in locating
any places on the globe or map. Using GPS, compass, maps and radars are
examples of equipment which can help us locate things and places. Learning how
to locate places using coordinate system will expose you to the practice of
developing and using models as you explore and identify landmasses and bodies
of water.

This module contains two (2) lessons:

Lesson 1 - Latitude and Longitude

Lesson 2 - Landmasses and Bodies of Water

After going through this module, you should be able to demonstrate how
places on Earth may be located using a coordinate system. (S7ES-IVa-1)

Specifically, you are expected to:

1. identify the latitude and longitude in a map or globe; and
2. locate places on Earth using a coordinate system.

Through this module, you are expected to widen your understanding by

analyzing what you are reading. This module was carefully designed and written
with you in mind. It is here to assist you to master the nature of Earth and Space.

The scope of this module permits you to use different learning situations.
The language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. Follow the
directions in the activities and answer the given tests and exercises properly.

What is It

Now that you have studied about our globe, you will notice that there are
two different lines as shown in Figure 3 below. The horizontal line is called the
latitude. At most, there are five latitudes with special names which are listed in the
table below:

Figure 6. Map of Asia

Table 1. Special Names of Latitude

Latitude Name
0° Equator
23.5° N Tropic of Cancer
23.5° S Tropic of Capricorn
60.5° N Arctic Circle
60.5° S Antarctic Circle

Now that you know the different names of our latitude, take note of the
Equator which is the center of our globe. It is the reference line in determining
the latitude and the basis for identifying northern and southern hemispheres.

When we say northern hemisphere, it is an area located from above the

equator up to the North Pole while the southern hemisphere is an area located
from below the equator down to the South Pole.

lOMoARcPSD|29525905

Aside from the horizontal lines, there are also vertical lines which are
called the longitude as shown in Figure 4 below. The starting point for longitude
is the Prime Meridian, which is at longitude 0° or at Greenwich, London, United
Kingdom.

London,
United

Prime
Meridian

Figure 4. Longitude showing East and West

(source: commons.wikimedia.org)

To the right of the Prime Meridian or the eastern hemisphere, the longitude
is written as 15° E, 30° E and so on. To the left or the western hemisphere, the
longitude is written as 15° W, 30° W and so on.

As you can see, the Prime Meridian is the reference line in determining the
longitude and the basis for understanding whether a certain place is found in the
eastern hemisphere or western hemisphere.

The location of a certain place can be described by using latitude and

longitude. The intersection point between the latitude and the longitude of a
certain place to find its location is called coordinate.
