Ekyda Winery (Winery Backround, Family Business)

Ekyda Winery is a family owned winery located in one of Australia’s oldest wine regions,
Langhorne Creek. The picturesque wine region is in between the Adelaide Hills and Lake
Alexandrina on the Fleurieu Peninsula of South Australia. Ekyda Winery was established in 1987
by Family Diego on the 100-acre Langhorne Creek property. This winery was owned and
operated by Rida and Polo Diego. The 6000 hectares of vineyards in the area have expanded as
a result of the exceptional soils and climate that enable them to consistently cultivate grapes of
the highest quality. Since starting to make their own wines in 1987, the Diego family, who have
been growing grapes in Langhorne Creek for more than 130 years, has quickly established an
admirable reputation for dependably creating exceptional wines. In the present, Kate Diego The
daughter of Rida and Polo, was the new owner that manages the whole winery.

Region & History

Our long history dates back to Seiñor Pito Gilmo in the 1850s. originally acquired land in
Langhorne Creek and constructed the original Fairholme homestead. In the late 1880s, Crispolo
Diego, who was married to Pito's granddaughter, planted the first vines on the land. At the age
of 19, Crispolo, Nestor Diego's eldest son, settled at "Hazel Farm" in Mount Barker after traveling
to Adelaide. After creating the vineyard at "Fairholme" and marrying Nazaria Castillo in 1890,
Crispolo followed his love to Langhorne Creek.

FOUNDER: KATE AARON DIEGO

The land had historically been used for both grape production and a prosperous dairy farm.
Crispolo Diego Jr. established the "Bremer View Illawarra Stud" in 1932, and he gained notoriety
for managing one of the top producing Illawarra herds in South Australia. Polo Jr. carried on his
father and grandfather's history but started to emphasize wine grape cultivation more. In the
1960s and 1970s, he replaced the original palomino and doradillo vines with cabernet sauvignon,
shiraz, and eventually chardonnay. Currently, these types make up the majority of our 100
hectare vineyard. At "Bernoota," the homestead constructed in the late 1920s, Polo Jr. and Rida
live.

With the release of the first vintage of Ekyda wine in 1987, a new chapter for the Diego family
began. This resulted in the cellar door being opened in 1991. Justine Diego, the winemaker,
Jaden Diego, the export and sales manager, and Kate Diego, who oversees the vineyard, are now
in charge, and they have all contributed to making Ekyda Wines the enormous success that it is
today. The Diegos put their hearts and souls into this risky endeavor despite its meager
beginnings because to the young winemaker's promising skill. Modern function space has been
added to the Ekyda cellar door, allowing guests to enjoy the breathtaking vineyard views from
one of the best vantage points in the area. A fantastic location for a leisurely meal or the ideal
setting for a special event.

The region where Ekyda winery located is perfectly fit. The productive soils around Langhorne
Creek are mostly deep, alluvial sand loams with areas of self-mulching, black clays that range in
color from red-brown to dark grey. All soil types support strong vine growth, wide canopies, and
high crop levels. The onshore southerly winds that cross Lake Alexandrina from the Southern
Ocean mostly influence the climate throughout the growth season. The dominant southerlies
minimize afternoon temperature swings. In addition to lowering summertime sunshine and
average temperatures, these southerlies also raise relative humidity levels.

Ethics & Quality

By acting morally in the marketplace, we think we can build trust. Additionally,

throughestablishing connections with organizations that share similar ethical standards.
Unquestionably, one of Australia's most stunning wineries is Ekyda. Through rigorous and
thorough viticultural practices, we honor the feeling of location, the land, and pride in agriculture.
On the Langhorne Creek, my family and I farm exceptional fruit from which we make our
selection of fine wines. Our goal is to bring the grape's natural expression as closely as
possible to the bottle. Langhorne Creek is a great place to cultivate grapes because of its
special soils and temperature. The winemaking industry is a collaborative one, with vineyards
growing fruit for some of Australia's greatest wine brands as well as boutique wineries
exploring alternative varietals.

What is the Winery known for (Reputation, legacy and/or accolades)?

For regularly producing top-notch wines, Ekyda Winery has established an excellent reputation.
is one of the most esteemed boutique vineyards in Australia. Additionally, it was extremely
successful in Australian Wine Shows. In Australia, Ekyda's Cabernet Sauvignon and "Bernoota"
Shiraz/Cabernet have established themselves as standards. Every November, the Handpicked
Festival brings attention to Ekyda Winery. Ekyda has developed into a buzzing venue for events
like weddings and concerts. The Barrel Room, a recently finished event room, has floor to
ceiling windows that look out over the lovely vineyard. The event area is made comfortable and
adaptable by the use of locally sourced limestone, natural woods, and walls lined with wine
barrels.

The majority of the wine produced in the area is red wine, with Cabernet Sauvignon and
Shiraz making up about 70% of the total vineyard area. These grape varietals can
produce wines with smooth and delicate tannins and a lot of extract that can be
varietally labelled or used in multivarietal blends. Merlot, Malbec, and Petit Verdot are
among other red grapes grown in this region. Additionally, Langhorne Creek is known
for making high-quality white wines, particularly Verdelho, which has a distinctive thick
texture with clean varietal aromas of citrus fruits and honeysuckle. Local winemakers
are also warming up to chardonnay.

Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes from old vines in the renowned wine region of
Langhorne Creek were used to create the dry red wine mix known as Ekyda Cabernet
Merlot. It has a gorgeous elevated blackberry bouquet with a hint of chocolate. This
wine's rich, silky mouthfeel and exquisite, gentle finish with polished tannins have been
improved by its 15 months of wood aging.
