there is either "excavation" to reduce
the existing ground level or
'embankment" to fill to 'a new
platform level or both.
 The main difference between
earthwork and building works
measurement is that while explicit
dimension are provided by the
designer to measure building works;
most earthwork have to be measured
based on only spot l e ve l s o r c o n t
o u r sh ow n i n drawings and this
requires some visualisation on the
part of the Q.S.

 The volume of earthwork are usually determined by one of the

following common methods:·
(a) Spot level or grid method

(b) Sectional Area Method

i. By Triangulation iv. By Method Of Square
ii. Trapezoidal Rule v. By Planimeter
