They wanted to have a king. So, the
leaders from the five villages had a

criteria who could be their king. "Our
king should be physically strong,"
said the leader from Tujuh Koto. "I
agree. The king should be able to
protect us from the enemies," said
one leader.

"Not only that. He should also be

well respected by us. So, the king

Petajin. "Then, let’s set the criteria. I

the pain if we burn him," said leader

"And he cannot feel the pain when

mill him in winding machine, he will
survive," said another leader.
"Alright then, now every village
must send one representative.
Choose the best man in your village.
He must be the strongest and the
most respected," said one leader.

Later, the best five men were

gathered in the field. All the leaders
had prepared fire, a hot water, and a
winding machine. The first one to
come was the villager of Tujuh Koto.
First, he had to walk through a ring
of fire. He survived! Audiences were
applauding. Next, he had to be boiled
inside a big water jug. The water was
so hot but still he survived!

Finally, he had to do the last test. He

had to enter the winding machine.
The machine was made of steel. The
man was a bit scared. He knew his
bones could break. Then, he was
lying on the surface. Right after his
feet were milled, he screamed in
pain. The machine was stopped. He
failed.

Then another contestant came

forward. Unfortunately, he also
failed in the last test. Then came
another contestant but he also failed.
All the best men from five villagers
failed. The leaders of the five
villagers then had a meeting.

"If we cannot find a king from our

place, let’s find from other area!"
said one leader. They then sailed the
sea. And every time they visited an
island, they always looked for the
best man. However, no one dared to
take the tests.

Finally, they arrived in India. There

was a strong man there. They met
him and talked about the tests. The
man was interested and they went
back to their hometown.

When they arrived, the man

immediately took the tests. He
passed the first test. Then, he was
boiled in the hot water and
amazingly he survived.

And then the final test. When he was

lying on the surface, everybody
screamed. They were afraid the
man’s bones would break just like
other contestants’ bones. But they
were wrong. The man survived. He
passed the test.

All the villagers were happy. They

finally had a strong king that could
protect them. And they named their
kingdom as Jambi.

Professionally speaking, employers
value employees who are able to
translate documents and
conversations in languages they don't
understand. In fact, bilingual or
multilingual professionals out-earn
their monolingual counterparts by
margins ranging from twice to three
times as much in earnings.
The social benefits of speaking more
than one language are great as well.
Imagine those times you are in line at
the coffee shop and you overhear a
pair of friends conversing in a
language you wish you understood.
By taking the time to learn the
language, you would be enabled to
participate in this conversation, a
skill often well received by non-
English speakers.
While there are immeasurable social
and professional benefits, there are
extraordinary physical benefits as
well. Studies have shown that
knowing another language is
healthful for the brain and the body
in a multitude of exciting ways. Let's
investigate:
In a study conducted by the
University of Edinburgh, findings
indicated that those who spoke two
or more languages had significantly
better cognitive abilities compared to
what would have been expected from
their baseline test. Researchers found
that the strongest effects were in
general intelligence and reading.
Excitingly, the effects were present
regardless of when the subject had
learned the language(s), whether
earlier or later in life. Says lead
researcher of the study Dr. Thomas
Bak, "These findings are of
considerable practical relevance.
Millions of people around the world
acquire their second language later in
life.
Dr. Ellen Bialystok, a psychologist at
York University in Toronto, studied
211 people with probable
Alzheimer's disease, half of whom
were bilingual and half were
monolingual. She documented the
age of when the patients' cognitive
impairment began, and found that
bilingual patients had been diagnosed
on average 4.3 years later, and had
reported onset of symptoms 5.1 years
later than monolingual patients.
It's a fairly natural assumption that
knowing another language involves
having a stronger memory, given the
nature of study. This assumption is
absolutely correct, as learning a
foreign language requires
memorizing rules and vocabulary,
subsequently strengthening the
brain's memory muscles. This mental
exercise improves overall memory,
making multilinguals better at

Moonbows are much fainter than

solar rainbows, due to the smaller
amount of light reflected from the
surface of the Moon. Because the
light is usually too faint to excite the
cone color receptors in human eyes,
it is difficult for the human eye to
discern colors in a moonbow. As a
result, a moonbow often appears to

Moonbows are most easily viewed

when the Moon is at or nearest to its
brightest phase full moon. For
moonbows to have the greatest
prospect of appearing, the Moon
must be low in the sky (at an
elevation of less than 42 degrees,
preferably lower) and must not be
obscured by cloud. In addition, the
night sky must be very dark. Since
the sky is not completely dark on a
rising/setting full moon, this means
they can only be observed two to
three hours before sunrise (a time
with few observers), or two to three
hours after sunset. And, of course,
there must be water droplets (e.g.
from rain or spray) opposite the
Moon. This combination of
requirements makes moonbows
much rarer than rainbows produced
by the daytime sunlight. Moonbows
may also be visible when rain falls
during full moonrise at extreme
latitudes during the winter months
when the prevalence of the hours of
darkness gives more opportunity for
the phenomenon to be observed.
