Narmada Basin
Preface
Optimal management of water resources is the necessity of time in the wake of development and
growing need of population of India. The National Water Policy of India (2002) recognizes that
development and management of water resources need to be governed by national perspectives in
order to develop and conserve the scarce water resources in an integrated and environmentally sound
basis. The policy emphasizes the need for effective management of water resources by intensifying
research efforts in use of remote sensing technology and developing an information system. In this
reference a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on December 3, 2008 between the
Central Water Commission (CWC) and National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), Indian Space Research
Organisation (ISRO) to execute the project “Generation of Database and Implementation of Web
enabled Water resources Information System in the Country” short named as India-WRIS WebGIS.
India-WRIS WebGIS has been developed and is in public domain since December 2010 (www.india-
wris.nrsc.gov.in). It provides a ‘Single Window solution’ for all water resources data and information in
a standardized national GIS framework and allow users to search, access, visualize, understand and
analyze comprehensive and contextual water resources data and information for planning,
development and Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM).
Basin is recognized as the ideal and practical unit of water resources management because it allows the
holistic understanding of upstream-downstream hydrological interactions and solutions for
management for all competing sectors of water demand. The practice of basin planning has
developed due to the changing demands on river systems and the changing conditions of rivers by
human interventions. The multiple uses of water and varying demands on a river basin require an
integrated approach to managing river basin.
Basin wise report generation is one the important deliverables of India-WRIS project. Report of
Narmada Basin describes systematically the present status of water resources: major water resources
projects, hydro-meteorological observations, surface and ground water development scenario,
topographic characteristics, climatic variability, land use / land cover pattern & allied natural resources
along with socio-economic profile of the basin. The report contains valuable latest information of the
basin on all aspects of water resources and allied sectors and will be useful as baseline information for
the irrigation officials, hydrologists, agriculturalists, conservationists, research organizations and all
those involved in the development of Narmada Basin.

Executive summary
Narmada basin possess varying topography, the upper most part of the terrain being hilly which gives
rise to the largest west flowing river Narmada at Amarkantak . As the river progress the middle part,
the terrain becomes fertile plain. The lower most part of the basin is the Coastal region where the river
joins the Arabian Sea.
The basin is divided into 3 sub-basins. The Narmada Upper, middle and lower sub-basin with a total of
150 watersheds. 19 important tributaries along with the main river Narmada, drains an area of
92,672.42 Sq.km which is 3% of total geographical area of the country.
Agriculture is the dominant landuse category (56.90 %) in the basin. Also, a large part is covered by
forest accounting to 32.88 % of the total area of the basin. Black soils are predominant in the basin. The
majority of the soil is characterised by shallow black soils in the upper basin. In the lower part of the
basin, the major soils of the valley and southern plateau are medium deep black soils. On the other
hand mixed red and black soils occur in the northern plateau.
The total population in the basin is 1,62,45,666 (Census data-2001) with 51.57 % male and 48.43 %
female population. Population density in the basin varies from 100 to 1000 persons/Sq.km. The source
of drinking water includes wells, tubewells and handpumps.
Narmada basin, on the basis of Agro-climatic regions, can be divided into Eastern, Central, Western
plateau hill region and Gujarat plains. Agro-ecologically, basin can be broadly divided into 2 zones- Hot
subhumid eco-region with red and black soils and Hot semi-humid arid eco-region with medium and
deep black soils.
About 30% of the basin is covered under major and medium command area. The 21 major and 23
medium projects constitute 277 dams, 2 barrages, 2 weirs and 4 lifts. These projects have an extensive
canal system spread largely in the middle and lower plains of the basin. Also 2 major hydro-electric
projects- Sardar sarovar (Installed Capacity-1450 MW) and Indira Sagar project (Installed capacity-1015
MW), along with 3 other projects contributes to a total of 3498.5 MW hydro-power generation in the
basin.
There are a total of 35 Hydro-meteorological stations in the basin. In the basin, 4 distinct seasons
occurs across the year. 90% of the rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The mean average
temperature varies from 18 OC to 32 OC.
Surface water quality observations are taken at 19 sites of CWC located in Madhya Pradesh and
Gujarat. 78 well locations in the Narmada Basin measures ground water quality parameters.

Narmada Basin
1. Introduction
1.1 Overview of basin
Narmada basin extends over an area of 92,672.42 Sq.km and lies between east longitudes 72° 38‘ to
81°43’ and north latitudes 21° 27’ to 23° 37’ which is nearly 3% of the total geographical area of the
country. The geographical location of Narmada Basin is shown in Map 1. Map 2a shows the 56 m
spatial resolution AWiFS satellite imagery of the basin.
The basin is bounded on the north by the Vindhyas, on the east by the Maikala range, on the south
by the Satpuras and on the west by the Arabian Sea. Lying in the northern extremity of the Deccan
plateau, the basin covers large areas in the States of Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and a comparatively
smaller area in Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh (Annexure I: A). The state wise distribution of the
basin area is shown in the Fig. 1.The basin spreads broadly over 27 districts and 20 parliamentary
constituencies (2009) comprising 15 of Madhya Pradesh, 3 of Gujarat, and 1 each of Chhattisgarh
and Maharashtra. (Annexure I: B)
The basin has an elongated shape with a maximum length of 953 km. from east to west and a
maximum width of 234 km from north to south. The hilly regions are in the upper part of the basin,
and lower middle reaches are broad and fertile areas well suited for cultivation.
Salient features of the basin are listed in Table 1. The average annual water potential of the basin is
45.64 BCM. The Utilizable Surface Water in the basin accounts to 34.50 BCM.
The basin is divided in 3 Sub-basins viz. Narmada Upper, Narmada Middle and Narmada Lower Sub-
basin. The drainage network of Narmada River consists of 19 major tributaries (total-41 tributaries)
as shown in Map 2b.
The total population in the basin is 1,62,45,666 (Census-2001). Out of this, 83,77,380 (51.57%) are
males and 78,68,286 (48.43 %) are females. Number of villages in the basin is 17493 and 3016933
no. of households.

Narmada Basin
1.2 Topography
The basin has five well defined physiographic zones. They are -
(i) The Upper hilly areas (ii) The Upper Plains (iii) The middle plains (iv) The lower hilly areas and (v)
the lower plains
The elevation variation in the basin is depicted in Table 2. From DEM it is noted that the maximum
area of the basin falls in the 300-500m elevation range. Maximum elevation is observed in the
uppermost region of the basin. The highest elevation in the basin is 1,317 m (SRTM DEM 90 m). The
elevation zone map of the basin is given in Map 3.
The upper hilly areas and plains come under the Vindhyanchal Baghelkhand region. The region is a
hill-valley complex covering Annupur, Shahdol, Dindori, Mandla, Balaghat, Jabalpur, Narsimhapur
and Chhindwara districts of Madhya Pradesh falling in Narmada basin. The main elements of this
region, spreading over Narmada basin are scraps of (i) Vindhyan sandstones and (ii) Narmada-Son
Trough on its south. The latter is a structural dislocation along the junction of Archaeans and the
Bijawars with the Vindhyans. The Narmada valley has youthful appearance and has falls, rapids and
gorges in its course. The Dhuandhar falls (Bheraghat, 15 m) followed by a 3 km long marble gorge is
an example in point. South of the trough, lies the geological and physiographic complex (eastern
expansion of the Satpura) and here is located country’s core of the radial drainage, the Amarkantak
(1,087 m) in the Maikala range. The whole surface is an assemblage of flat-topped plateaus
(Chhindwara, Seoni, Maikal, Deogarh, etc.) with 600-900 m general elevation.
The middle plains and the lower hilly areas come under the Malwa region. The region covers
Hoshangabad, Betul, East Nimar, West Nimar, Barwani, Dhar, Dewas, Sehore and Jhabua districts of
Madhya Pradesh falling in the basin. Malwa region, in the basin falls into following well-marked
physiographic units: (i) West Vindhyas, (ii) West Narmada Trough and (iii) West Satpuras. The
6
Narmada Basin
Vindhya range runs in a curve for the first 100 km from its western terminus, its convex side facing
the Narmada Valley. For the next 160 km, a more open type of country prevails and the basaltic
escarpment becomes more prominent near Hoshangabad, the rock type changes, the Vindhya Range
comes down very close to the Narmada River and presents a terraced slope built of hard
sandstones alternating with shales.Western Narmada Trough is a tract of fertile land. The Narmada
valley has a variable longitudinal slope and is broken up into parts separated by hills. Narmada flows
through a gorge (the Mandhata gorge) carved out of Vindhyan sandstones. North of Narmada is the
Dhar Upland, a hilly and forested area. Nimar upland stretches from east to west in the north of the
Satpuras. The Western Satpuras separate the Narmada and the Tapi basins.
The lowermost part of the basin falls under Gujarat region. The Gujarat Alluvial Plain is the outcome
of an extensive Pleistocene sedimentation called as Coastal Alluvium. The elevation of this region
ranges from 5-10 m or even less.

1.3 Climate
The Tropic of Cancer crosses the Narmada basin in the upper plains area and a major part of the
basin lies just below this line. The climate of the basin is humid and tropical, although at places
extremes of heat and cold are often encountered.
In the year, four distinct seasons occur in the basin. They are (i) cold weather, (ii) hot weather, (iii)
south-west monsoon and (iv) post-monsoon. The cold weather season which commences in
November and continues till the end of February, is characterised by bright cloudless days and clean
nights and piercing winds. There is slight precipitation in the basin during this season.
The hot weather starts in March and continues up to the middle of June. May is usually the hottest
month. This season is generally dry.
The south-west monsoon sets in by the middle of June and withdraws by the first week of October.
June to September is the rainiest months. During this season, the weather is somewhat sultry and
oppressive, especially in areas adjoining the Narmada River.
In the post-monsoon season, a few thunder-storms occur, especially in October. Thereafter, the
weather clears up and dry pleasant weather prevails throughout the valley. (Source: Report of
Irrigation Commission,1972)
1.3.1 Rainfall
Rainfall is heavy in the upper hilly and upper plains areas of the basin. It gradually decreases towards
the lower plains and the lower hilly areas and again increases towards the coast and south-western
portions of the basin (Map 4.)
In the upper hilly areas, the annual rainfall, in general, is more than 1400 mm but it goes up to 1650
mm in some parts. In the upper plains, near Jabalpur to near Punasa dam site, the annual rainfall
decreases from 1400 mm to less than 1000 mm with the high rainfall zone around Pachmarhi where
the annual rainfall exceeds 1800 mm. In the lower plains the annual rainfall decreases rapidly from
1000 mm at the eastern and to less than 650 mm around Barwani. This area represents the most
arid part of the Narmada Basin. In the lower hill areas, the annual rainfall again increases to a little
over 750 mm (Source: www.nca.gov.in). Sub-basin wise Annual Rainfall for 1971-2004 is given in
Annexure II: A.A major portion of the precipitation in the basin takes place during the southwest
monsoon, and accounts for about 85% to 95% of the total precipitation. The post monsoon accounts
for about 9% of the precipitation whereas the winter and the pre-monsoon, together account for
about a maximum of 10% of the total precipitation.
From the data of fifty years on intensity of rainfall during a 24 hours period as compiled by the
Central Water Commission, it can be concluded that the most intense rain occurs in the southern
section of the upper Narmada basin, where 24-hour rainfall is about 360 mm. The least intense
rainfall occurs in lower middle part of the basin, where the 24 hours rainfall is less 260 mm.
Nearly 90% of this rainfall is received during the five monsoon months from June to October and
about 60% is received in the two months of July & August.
However, around 83 blocks of 15 districts (3-Gujarat, 11-Madhya Pradesh & 1-Maharashtra) in the
basin are drought prone (Source: Drought Prone Areas Program, DPAP, MoRD, 2002).
9
Narmada Basin
1.3.2 Temperature
Temperature of Narmada Basin is like any other part of Central India. The difference between the
maximum & minimum temperature, in any part of the basin, is quite pronounced. The temperature
is maximum in the month of May and minimum in the month of January. In general, the upper
Narmada Basin records lower temperature as compared to middle basin. In lower section of the
basin, the influence of the sea is prominent, and temperature though lower than the middle basin, is
higher than the upper reaches of Narmada River. (Source: Report of Irrigation Commission, 1972)
Temperature profile of the basin (Fig 2.) shows that in the cold weather, January month records the
lowest temperature (Minimum Temperature-10.87°C) and May records the highest temperature
(Maximum Temperature-40.58 °C) in the hot weather for the period of 36 years (Annexure II: B).

1.6 Soils
Soil is composed of minerals, mixed with some organic matter, which differ from its parent materials
in terms of its texture, structure, consistency, color, chemical, biological and other characteristics.
Information on the soil profile is also required for simulating the hydrological character of the basin.
The available information on soil survey conducted in the basin indicates that black soils are
predominant in the basin. The coastal plains are composed of alluvial clays with a layer of black soil
on top.
In the upper basin, the majority of the soil are characterised by shallow black soils. These soils are
erosional products of trap basalts. The black soils are rich in smeclite clays having a high water
holding capacity. These clay lattices expand when they absorb water and thus reduce the water
drainage. The organic matter is generally less than 5% in black soils. The black soils in the upper
basin are generally in-situ kor collovial. These soils are often interspersed with red sandy or laterite
soils. The profile is generally shallow and mainly covers the hilltops and plateau regions. The red soils
are the result of intense chemical leaching of basalts whereby all the minerals in the rock are
leached out except the oxides of silica, iron and aluminium. Due to intense leaching, these soils have
a reasonably good drainage but lacking in nutrients essential for plant growth.
The soils in the Vindhyan and Satpura plateau region of the middle basin range from shallow black
soils to medium black soils. Around Hoshangabad, recent alluviums with varied thickness can be
witnessed. This soil is extremely fertile and supports cotton, Jawar and wheat.
In the lower part of the basin, the major soils of the valley and southern plateau are medium deep
black soils. On the other hand mixed red and black soils occur in the northern plateau. In the mouth
of the Narmada, Pliocene rocks along with recent alluviums are seen. These alluvial soils are mostly
sandy looms with good drainage. They are extremely fertile and support good crops. (Source: Water
Year Book, CWC, 2002-03)
More than 50 % of the basin is covered with soil of Fine texture followed by the medium texture soil
(aprox.45%) as shown in Map 6.
Soil erosion is fairly severe in the upper hilly and upper plains regions in the Narmada basin. Severe
erosion also occurs throughout course of the river in the lower plains. Else, the soil erosion in the
middle and lower plain areas in the basin is of moderate intensity (Map 7.).
The major portion of the basin is with gentle slope accounting to more than 40% as shown in Map 8.
Nearly 20% of soil is highly productive and maximum of approx.28 % is moderately productive soil
(Map 9.)

5. Hydro-met observations
Meteorology and hydrology compose the interdisciplinary field of hydrometeorology. Systematic
and scientific hydrological observation and other water resources data collection forms the basic
need in the rational assessments of the surface water resources of river basins, which is one of the
foremost inputs for the overall planning and devolvement of the basin.

6. Water quality
6.1 Surface water quality observations
CWC stations carry out observations for testing the surface water quality pertaining to sixty eight
water quality parameters which are considered to be the ‘Standard Hydrology Project Water Quality
Parameters’. All physical, chemical and biological water quality parameters are categorized further
under sub categories like field determinations, nutrients, organic matter, alkalinity, hardness, other
inorganics, major ions, coliforms and others.
Water Quality observations are taken at 19 Surface water quality observation sites of CWC. Out of
this, 17 sites (Sandia,Barmanghat, Bamni, Dindori, Chhidgaon, Pati, Kogaon, Manot, Mohgaon,
Mandleshwar,Handia,Hoshangabad,Rajghat,Patan,Gadarwara,Belkheri,Dhulsar are located in
Madhya Pradesh and 2 sites (Garudeshwar,Chandwada) are located in Gujarat.
As compared to the other rivers, the quality of Narmada water is quite good. Even near the point of
origin, the quality of river water was in class ‘C’ in the year 2001 while it was in class ‘B’ in earlier
years. As was observed for most other rivers, in case of Narmada also, BOD and Total Coliform are
critical parameters. (Source: www.nih.ernet.in)
Other than CWC, the State Pollution Control Boards of Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat are also doing
the water quality monitoring of the River Narmada at 21 locations and its tributary streams Chhota
Tawa, Gour, Katni and Kunda at one location each.

Amarkantak is a great pilgrim centre for the Hindus, and is the source of the rivers Narmada and
Sone. While the Narmada flows westwards from Amarkantak, the Sone flows towards the East.
Amarkantak is indeed blessed by Nature. Holy ponds, lofty hills, forested surroundings,
breathtakingly beautiful waterfalls and an ever-pervading air of serenity make Amarkantak a much
sought-after destination for the religious-minded as well as for the nature-lover. Here we can see
Brighu Righu Kamandal, Dhuni Pani and Dubhara.
Garudeshwar , Bawangaja , Omkareshwar, Bhrigu Kamandal, and Salkanpur Temple are some of the
other pilgrimage centres located on/ nearby Narmada river.
The Dudhdhara Waterfall, near Amarkantak is famous for its milk-white waterfall from a height of
about 4.6 m.
Kapildhara Waterfall , with a fall of about hundred feet, is famous for scene of natural beauty with
mountains and dense forest down hills.
Kanha National Park located in the upper reaches of Narmada, about 18 km from Mandla, boasts of
several wild animals including the Tiger. Two tributaries of Narmada, namely, Hallon and Banjar,
flow through this park. It is one of the best National Parks of Asia, which has been described vividly
by Rudyard Kipling in his famous creation "Jungle Book".
Satpura National Park, set up in 1981, is located in Hoshangabad district of Madhya Pradesh. Its
name is derived from Satpura hill ranges (Mahadeo hills) and covers an area of 524 Sq.km and along
with the adjoining Bori and Panchmarhi Sanctuaries, provides 1,427 Sq.km of unique Central Indian
Highland ecosystem. Satpura National Park, being part of a unique ecosystem, is very rich in
biodiversity.
Dindori National Fossils Park Ghughuya is situated in Dindori district of Madhya Pradesh in India.
This national park has plants in fossil form that existed in India anywhere between 40 million and

150 million years ago spread over seven villages of Mandla District (Ghuguwa, Umaria, Deorakhurd,
Barbaspur, Chanti-hills, Chargaon and Deori Kohani). The Mandla Plant Fossils National Park is an
area that spreads over 0.274 Sq.km. Such fossils are found in three other villages of the district also,
but they lie outside the national park.
The Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve covers part of three civil districts viz., Hoshangabad, Betul and
Chhindwara of Madhya Pradesh. The total area is 4,926.28 Sq.km. It envelops three wildlife
conservation units viz., Bori Sanctuary (518.00 Sq.km), Satpura National Park (524.37 Sq.km), and
Pachmarhi Sanctuary (461.37 Sq.km). Satpura National Park comprises the core zone and the
remaining area of 4,501.91 Sq.km), surrounding the core zone serves as buffer zone. The area
exhibits variety of geological rock and soil formations. It is one of the oldest forest reserves, which
has an established tradition of scientific management of forests.
Apart from the above national parks, there are also a number of natural preserves such as the Bagh
Caves (A group of nine caves & rock cut monuments representing the finest specimens of Buddhist
art and architecture in India) and the Bhedaghat (the Marble Rocks at Bhedaghat rise to a hundred
feet on either side of the Narmada river).
Shoolpaneshwar Sanctuary in Gujarat, near the Sardar Sarovar dam site, previously called the
Dumkal Sloth Bear Sanctuary now covers an area of about 607 Sq.km, comprises a major watershed
feeding the Sardar Sarovar and Karjan reservoir (on the Karjan River, a tributary of Narmada in
Gujarat). It is the habitat of mammals and a variety of birds, including eagles and hawks. (Source:

10. Conclusion
The report has been prepared using state-of-art space technology viz. Remote Sensing and GIS
techniques. Basin, sub-basin and watersheds, derived using DEM are used as hydrology unit in a very
scientific manner. The administrative boundaries of Survey of India have been used. IMD gridded
data for climate trend analysis and CWC data for water resources projects have been used for this
study.
Under India-WRIS project, entire country’s river basin and sub-basin boundaries have been
delineated and in the present report Narmada river basin and its various aspects are described.
Narmada is the seventh largest river of the country. The Narmada and its tributaries form an inter-
State river system flowing through the States of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat
constituting 9th largest basin area. The concerned states have arrived at an agreement regarding
sharing of water resources of the basin under the Narmada Water Disputes Tribunal. With the award
of the Narmada Water Disputes Tribunal, the basin is assured of all-round development in the water
resources front.
Mean annual rainfall in the basin accounts to 1062.45 mm. The utilizable surface water resources in
Narmada basin is 34.5 BCM. The total live storage capacity is 24.92 BCM (completed- 17.622 BCM,
under-construction-6.8347 BCM and under-consideration- 0.466 BCM) (Source: Water Resources at
a Glance, CWC, 2013).
As per Water Year Book CWC, 2002-03, the cultivable land of the basin is about 60% and only about
45% of the land was put to actual agricultural use. The agricultural area has been observed upto
56.9% of the basin as per Land Use Land Cover 2005-06 study indicating developments in the
agriculture sector.
Soil erosion pose an issue for the conservation of river supplies and especially of the storage
capacities created in the reservoirs. Hence, it is important that soil conservation measures are to be
taken up both in the cultivated areas and cultivable areas (not under cultivation).
With the available information, the study provides detailed insight of the Narmada river basin
specific to water resources. It can be used for basin level sustainable development and Integrated
water resources management (IWRM).
