EE224 – ELECTRICAL CIRCUITS 2

FINAL OUTPUT

Objective: Apply knowledge in Electrical Circuits 2 through calculation of electrical parameters

such as voltage, current, power factor, and power of assumed or determined electrical loads of a
commercial or industrial building.

Procedure:

1. Students will select or assume a commercial or industrial building with 3 phase wye-delta
supply with 230V line to line secondary voltage.
2. Students will identify or assume electrical loads and group them. The group of loads can
be a group of single-phase loads or a group of 3-phase loads or a combination of 3-phase
loads and single-phase loads. The grouping of loads depends on the students or depends
on the identified loads. In grouping, the single-phase loads, the smallest load in one phase
must not be less than 80% of the phase with maximum load.
3. The students will use the provided table to input the information of the electrical loads
and solve other electrical parameters that are needed in the table. Show all calculations.
4. The students will solve the total load information per phase, three-phase, and
combination of three-phase and single-phase. Show all calculations
5. Students will assume the terminal connection of two wattmeter and solve the reading of
each wattmeter to the total assumed or determined loads.
6. The students will have a conclusion of the activity.

Assumed Commercial Building: Bakeshop, Computer Shop, and Barber Shop

Conclusion

Upon the calculated results from the activity, we have concluded the following, grouped
based on the panel board number:

In the first panel board, designed for a bakeshop, we have taken values either from the real
power, power factor, or current of commercial appliances for the business. Assuming a line to line
voltage of 230V, we calculated for the missing parameters. We garnered a real power total of 6968
W, apparent power of 8034.1 VA, reactive power of 3999.22 VAR, power factor of 0.87, and an
angle of 29.54°. Also, managing to balance the value of the current for each phase. ∅AB with
11.84 A, ∅BC with 11.95 A, and ∅AC with 11.14 A.

In the second panel board, designed for a computer shop, we have applied the same process
with that of the first panel board. We calculated a real power total of 7635 W, apparent power of
9924.5 VA, reactive power of 6340.54 VAR, power factor of 0.77, and an angle of 39.65°. Also,
managing to balance the value of the current for each phase. ∅AB with 14.58 A, ∅BC with 13.57
A, and ∅AC with 15 A.

In the third panel board, designed for a barber shop, similar to the first and second panel
board. We calculated a real power total of 11701 W, apparent power of 12717.6 VA, reactive
power of 4982.36 VAR, power factor of 0.92, and an angle of 23.07°. Also, managing to balance
the value of the current for each phase. ∅AB with 17.83 A, ∅BC with 19.13 A, and ∅AC with
18.33 A.
For the fourth panel board, this was designated for the 3-phase loads that are present in the
assumed building. We have taken the real power and power factor of the appliances common in
commercial use. With such, we calculated the remaining parameters. For the total real power, we
calculated a total of 72774 W, an apparent power of 76925.09 VA and a reactive power of
24928.18 VAR. With total pf of 0.95, angle of 18.19°, and a current of 193.095 A.
The main panel, which includes all the panel boards from the different businesses. The
total real power, total apparent power, and total calculated reactive power is 99078 W, 107601.29
VA, 41971.27 VAR, respectively. The calculated power factor is 0.92, angle is 23.07°, and phase
currents of: ∅AB with 44.25 A, ∅BC with 44.65 A, ∅AC with 44.47 A, and ∅ABC = 193.095 A.

Last was the 2-wattmeter reading. From the previous calculations we have obtained the
total real power for the main panel being 99078 W, which is approximately 99 kW. We first
calculated the line current and obtained the result of 270.33 A. With it, we calculated for W1 and
W2, thus obtaining the values 37357.7 W and 61721.66 W, respectively. Total being 99079.36
which is approximately close to the total real power from the main panel.
Through this activity and results we have acquired an idea within the effects of the
parameters present within and equipment, and how it correlates to one another. One would be,
having a higher power factor decreases the value of the reactive power. We managed to balance
the currents for each phase which helps in a better supply for each appliance. From this activity
also, we managed to obtain needed data in power consumption which is beneficial to the person
owning the building and the businesses.
