When you look up a verb in the dictionary, you’ll often find that the form of the verb in the
dictionary is different from the form of the verb in your book.

This is because the dictionary gives verbs in the infinitive.


To find the right meaning of verbs, remember:
infinitives always end in -ar, -er, or -ir.
always make sure the word you find makes sense in the context!

Gender Your dictionary gives the masculine and feminine forms of adjectives.
Often the feminine form either just adds an -a or replaces the -o of the masculine form
with -a. In many cases, the same form is used for the masculine and the feminine.

Some set phrases can’t be translated word for word – they don’t make sense.
Don’t just look up the first word of a set phrase. Look up what looks like the most
important word in the phrase. If the phrase isn’t there, look up another word.
For example, if a Spanish person asks if you want a “café cortado”, he isn’t
offering you a coffee that’s gone off! Can you see what “café cortado” does mean?
