English First

Peoples 12

Teacher: Mr. Troy Moore

Course Description: The aim of English Language Arts, and specifically EFP 12 is to
provide students with opportunities for personal and intellectual growth through
speaking, listening, reading, viewing, writing, and representing to make meaning
of the world and to prepare them to participate effectively in all aspects of society.
The course is grounded in the First Peoples Principles of Learning. It is
designed for all students, Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal, who are interested
in delving deeply into First Peoples oral and written literature and visual texts
in a range of media.

Goals: It is expected (and hoped) students will:

 examine texts grounded in a diversity of First Peoples cultures,

including local First Nations or Métis communities
 extend their capacity to communicate effectively in a variety of
contexts
 think critically and creatively about the uses of language
 deepen their understanding of themselves and others in a changing
world
 gain insight into the diverse factors that have shaped and continue to
shape their own identities
 appreciate the importance of self-representation through authentic First
Peoples text
 contribute to Reconciliation by building greater understanding of the
knowledge and perspectives of First Peoples
 expand their understandings of what it means to be educated Canadian
and global citizens

Policy and Procedure:

Equipment: A binder or notebook with lots of paper. A pen or pencil. Please

always bring these to class.

Attendance: Mandatory.

Punctuality: Students should arrive on time. However, things happen (car breaks
down, missed the bus, overslept, alien abduction, etc.), if a student is tardy they should
enter quietly and sit down. Activities missed at the beginning of class (attendance/pop
quizzes) will result in lost marks, so students should try to be there.

Assignments: Need to be completed by the due date. Any late assignments, after
the cut off date, will not be accepted and could result in an IE for the course.

Cell Phones: Cell phones are a no-go. If they come out, they will be taken away.
