TOPIC: Heat Transfer (Fireproof Balloon)

SKILL: Plan and Design

AIM: To determine what the relationship is between the amounts of water in a balloon and how
long it will take to burst when held over a candle.

MATERIALS/APPARATUS:

 A candle (votive candle which is not easily knocked over)

 A box of match
 Latex Balloons (6)
 Water (5 ¼ Cups)
 Liquid measuring cup
 Stopwatch
 Funnel
 Ruler
 Thermometer
 A notebook & pen

DIAGRAM OF APPARATUS:

DIAGRAM OF APPARATUS USED TO DETERMINE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN

THE AMOUNT OF WATER IN A BALLOON AND THE TIME IT WOULD TAKE TO
BURST WHEN HELD OVER A FLAME
PROCEDURE:

1. Gather all the materials.

2. Using the thermometer, check if the water is at room temperature.
3. Measure ¼ cup of water using the liquid measuring cup.
4. Pour the water into one of the balloons using the funnel.
5. Tie the mouth of the balloon closed and place it aside.
6. Light the candle using the box of matches.
7. Using the ruler, measure 1 inch above the flame.
8. Now hold the balloon with water in it by the neck, 1 inch above the flame, and start the
stopwatch.
9. Stop the stopwatch in sync with the time when the balloon bursts.
10. Record the time in the data display table.
11. Repeat steps 3–10 five more times, but increase the amount of water by ¼ cup each time.
12. Repeat steps 1–10 for two more trials.
13. Calculate the average time taken for the balloon to burst for each amount of water and
place the results in the data display table.
14. After completing the experiment, plot a graph x against y to show the relationship
between the amount of water a balloon is filled with and the time it takes to burst when
held over a flame.

CONCLUSION:

LIMITATION/ASSUPTION/PRECAUTION:

 The failure to measure the different amounts of water at eye level with the liquid
measuring cup could be a source of error in this experiment, affecting the ultimate results.

 When carrying out this experiment, a precaution that was taken was to conduct it in a
room that is at room temperature so that the temperature of the room does not impact the
temperature of the water, which could lead to somewhat inaccurate findings.
TREATMENT OF RESULTS:

The hypothesis is supported if the amount of water that a balloon is filled with and the time it
takes for it to burst when held over a candle have a direct relationship. If the amount of water in
the balloon and the time it takes for it to burst do not have a direct relationship, then the
hypothesis is dismissed.

HYPOTHESIS: If a balloon that is filled to the brim with water and a balloon that is half-filled
with water are held over a candle, then the balloon with water filled to the brim will take longer
to burst and the balloon that is half-filled with water will take less time to burst.
