Subject: Practical Research

Grade Level: Grade 12

Objective: To study the parts of a microscope.

Learning across the curriculum:

1. Biology - Study the different types of cells and how microscopes are used to
observe them.

2. Chemistry - Explore the use of microscopes in analyzing the structure of

molecules.

3. Physics - Investigate the principles of optics and how they apply to microscopes.

Elicit:

- Ask students if they have ever used a microscope before and what they know
about its parts and functions.

Engage:

1. Show a video clip demonstrating the use of a microscope and its parts.

2. Present a real microscope to the class and allow students to examine it closely.

3. Share interesting facts about the discoveries made possible through the use of
microscopes.

Explore:

Activity 1: Microscope Parts Identification

Materials: Microscope, microscope diagram, worksheet

Instructions: Distribute the microscope diagram and worksheet to each
student. Ask them to label the parts of the microscope using the diagram as a
reference. Provide guidance as needed.

Rubric:

- Correctly labeled parts: 5 points

- Neatness and accuracy: 3 points

Assessment questions:

1. What is the function of the eyepiece in a microscope?

2. Which part of the microscope is used to adjust the focus?

Activity 2: Microscope Assembly

Materials: Microscope parts (disassembled), instructional guide

Instructions: Divide the class into small groups. Provide each group with a set
of microscope parts and an instructional guide. Instruct them to assemble the
microscope following the guide. Monitor their progress and provide assistance
when necessary.

Rubric:

- Correctly assembled microscope: points

- Teamwork and cooperation: 5 points

Assessment questions:

1. What is the purpose of the base in a microscope?

2. How does the diaphragm control the amount of light entering the microscope?

Activity 3: Microscope Observation

Materials: Prepared slides, microscope, observation sheet

Instructions: Provide each student with a prepared slide and an observation
sheet. Instruct them to use the microscope to observe the slide and record
their observations on the sheet. Encourage them to explore different
magnifications and adjust the focus as needed.

Rubric:

- Accurate observations: 5 points

- Clear and organized recording: 3 points

Assessment questions:

1. What is highest magnification power of the objective lens in the microscope?

. How does adjusting the condenser affect the quality of the image?

Activity 4: Microscope Magnification

Materials: Microscope, prepared slides with different magnifications,

observation sheet

Instructions:

1. Provide each student with a prepared slide that has a known magnification level.

2. Instruct students to observe the slide using the microscope and record the
magnification level on the observation sheet.

3. Ask students to compare and contrast the observations made at different

magnification levels.

Rubric:

- Accurate recording of magnification levels: 5 points

- Clear and detailed comparisons: 4 points

- Correctly identifying the benefits and limitations of different magnification levels: 3

points

Activity 5: Microscope Maintenance

Materials: Microscope, lens cleaning paper, lens cleaning solution

Instructions:

1. Demonstrate to students how to properly clean the lenses of a microscope using

lens cleaning paper and solution.

2. Divide the class into small groups and provide each group with a microscope that
needs cleaning.

3. Instruct students to clean the lenses of the microscope following the demonstrated
technique.

Rubric:

- Proper cleaning technique: 5 points

- Clean and clear lenses: 4 points

- Collaboration and teamwork: 3 points

Activity 6: Microscope Comparison

Materials: Different types of microscopes (compound, dissecting, electron),

comparison chart

Instructions:

1. Present different types of microscopes to the class, including compound,

dissecting, and electron microscopes.

2. Provide each student with a comparison chart.

3. Instruct students to research and compare the features, magnification capabilities,

and applications of each type of microscope and record their findings on the chart.

Rubric:

- Accurate and detailed comparisons: 5 points

- Clear and organized presentation of information: 4 points

- Critical analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of each type of microscope:

3 points
Note: It is essential to provide clear instructions and guidelines to students for
each activity. Encourage them to ask questions and seek assistance when
needed. Regularly check their progress and provide feedback to ensure their
understanding of the microscope parts and their functions.

Explain:

1. Conduct a whole-class discussion on the different parts of the microscope and

their functions.

2. Demonstrate how to properly use and handle a microscope, emphasizing safety

precautions.

Elaborate:

1. Provide additional slides with different specimens for students to observe and
analyze using the microscope.

2. Discuss the importance of proper maintenance and cleaning of microscopes to

ensure accurate observations.

Evaluate:

1. Administer a written test on the parts and functions of the microscope.

2. Assign a microscope-related research project where students explore the various

applications of microscopes in different fields of science.

Extend:

Organize a field trip to a research facility or laboratory where students can observe
advanced microscopes in action and interact with scientists conducting research.

Assignment:

Write a reflection paper discussing the significance of microscopes in scientific

research and its impact on our understanding of the natural world.
