BATH
What is BED BATH?
A bed bath cleans the skin and helps keep
the skin free of infection. It helps to relax
the person being bathed and helps him
feel better. The nurse may only need to get
the bath supplies ready and wash the
patient's back, or may need to do most or
all of the bath.
PURPOSES:
To remove transient microorganisms,
body secretions and excretions, and dead
skin cells.

To prevent and eliminate unpleasant body

odors.
To stimulate circulation to the skin.

To promote a sense of well-being.

To produce relaxation and comfort.

CATEGORIES OF
BATHS
1. Cleansing Bath
2. Therapeutic Bath
CLEANSING BATH
This is given chiefly for hygiene
purposes.
THERAPEUTIC BATH
This is given for physical effects such
as to soothe irritated skin or to treat an
area (e.g., the perineum).

COMPLETE BED BATH
SELF-HELP (ASSISTED)
PARTIAL BATH
BAG BATH
TOWEL BATH
TUB BATH
SHOWER
COMPLETE BED BATH
The nurse washes
the entire body of
a dependent
client in bed.
 SELF-HELP/ASSISTED
BED BATH
Clients confined to bed are
able to bathe themselves
with help from the nurse
for washing the back, and
perhaps, the feet.
 PARTIAL BATH
Only the parts of the
client's body that
might cause
discomfort or odor, if
neglected, are
washed.
 BAG BATH
This bath is a
commercially prepared
product that contains
10-12 presoaked
disposable washcloths
that contain no-rinse
cleanser solution.
 TOWEL BATH
This bath is
similar to a bag
bath but uses
regular towels.
 TUB BATH
This is often
preferred to bed
bath because it is
easier to wash
and rinse in a tub.

PROCEDURE
1. Prior to performing the procedure, introduce
self and verify client's identity using agency
protocol. Explain the procedure to the client.

2. Perform hand hygiene and observe other

appropriate infection prevention
procedures.
3. Provide for client privacy by drawing the
curtains around the bed or closing the door to
the room.
4. Prepare the client and the environment.
5. Prepare the bed and position the client
appropriately.
6. Make a bath mitt with the washcloth.
7. Wash the face.
8. Wash the arms and hands.
9.Wash the chest and abdomen.
10. Wash the legs and feet.
11. Wash the back and then perineum.

12. Assist the client with grooming aids

such as powder, lotion, or deodorant.

13.Prepare the client and the tub.

14. Assist the client into the shower or tub.
15. Assist the client with washing and
getting out of the tub.

16. Dry the client, and assist with follow-up

care.
