1 General information
Cold climate sites have specific requirements. It is therefore necessary to take the special conditions into
account when designing the WEC.
Requirements at a cold climate site:
 Temperatures below - 20°C on more than 10 days during a long-term measurement period of 10
years
 Temperature on those nine days below - 20°C for an hour or more.
The photos/figures in this document serve as illustrations and may differ from the actual components.

2 Safety instructions

DANGER!
Risk of injury and fatal accidents when working on the WEC!
Risk of injury and fatal accidents due to improper conduct in or around the WEC or improper
use of tools and materials.
Therefore:
 ENERCON health and safety regulations apply.
 It is imperative to follow all relevant ENERCON instructions for safe use as well as the
manufacturers’ operating manuals and instructions.
 Should the safety standards of the respective country be more stringent than those re-
quired by ENERCON, the national regulations apply.

3 General information concerning cold climate WECs

 At commissioning during low temperatures, the MV transformer is operated as per procedure in-
structions in idle mode for approx. 3 hours once the MV switchgear has been switched on. This
evenly heats up the silicone oil in the transformer. It also warms up the areas above the trans-
former as well as the electrical cabinets.
 After a longer power failure, the turbine software delays operation in order to ensure that the MV
transformer has time to warm up.
 The control and power cabinets are equipped with a special heating system.
 Heaters are installed in the following components:
o blade relay box
o capacitor boxes (band heater)
o rotor
 To prevent the capacitors from being damaged by heat given off by the metal housing, the ca-
pacitor box has to be thermally insulated.
 The rotor is heated when the excitation controller injects current. The generator is heated by
means of this rotor heating.
 The rotor heating also heats the nacelle. The 6 nacelle fans in the stator shield used for cooling
are only partially activated. Cold nacelle air is blown into the generator and heated up.
 The change in pressure causes the heated air to flow through the deactivated nacelle fans back

into the nacelle.
 The rotor blade pitch control is electrically heated and therefore protected from cold damage and
condensation. Each pitch motor is heated without active armature winding by supplying power to
the field winding.
 The power loss heats up the motor during operation.
 The wind turbines are provided with modified components and consumables:
o Tower
o Safety ladder
o Main carrier
o Stator shield
o Axle pin
o Hub
o Blade adapter
o Yaw gear
o Pitch gear
o Pitch control and yaw gear lubricants (RENOLIN® Unisysn CLP 68 (SAP 99420))
 No special generator is required!
 No special lubricants are used.
 Control system: A "Cold climate turbine" menu has been added to the basic settings of the control
cabinet I/O Board PCB.
o Normally the parameter is set to "NO"
o It the prerequisites for a CC turbine are met the parameter is set to "YES".
o If the WEC is not a "Cold climate turbine" and the parameter is set to "YES", it can dam-
age the WEC.

The cast components are marked with CC

(Fig. 1).

The type of oil also indicates that the WEC

is a cold climate turbine (Fig. 2).

4 Turbine behaviour

Fig. 3: CC turbine power curve

The power curve during WEC operation is not affected at temperatures above - 30°C. Below this tem-
perature, maximum wind energy converter power is gradually reduced to 25% until a temperature of -
40°C is reached. At temperatures lower than - 40°C, the wind energy converter is stopped and remains
ready for operation. The turbine is restarted as soon as the temperature has risen to - 35°C (Fig. 3).
