I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standards – The learners demonstrate an understanding of the relationship among the locations of
volcanoes, earthquake epicenters, and mountain ranges.
B. Performance Standards – The learners shall be able to:
1. demonstrate ways to ensure disaster preparedness during earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions.
2. suggest ways by which he/she can contribute to government efforts in reducing damage due to earthquakes,
tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions.
C. Most Essential Learning Competency – The learners should be able to
1. Describe and relate the distribution of active volcanoes, earthquake epicenters, and major mountain belts;
S10ES – Ia-j-36.1
Specific Objectives: Given the necessary materials, students should be able to:
1. Measure the computed distance on the map scale;
2. Draw the circle on the map with the recording station as the center using a drawing compass;
3. Locate the earthquake epicenter from the intersection of the 3 circles;
4. Develop critical thinking and numeracy skills.
II. CONTENT : PLATE TECTONICS
Topic: Finding the Epicenter of an Earthquake
Integration: English- language: widening vocabulary
Math- computation, scaling and measuring
AP- geography: being familiar with locations, using map and compass
III. LEARNING RESOURCES
A. References
1. Teacher’s Guide pages - 7-9
2. Learner’s Material pages - 8-10
3. Textbook pages -
4. Additional Materials -
SLeM 2: Finding the Epicenter
from Learning resources (LR ) portal
B. Other Learning Resources – DETERMINING THE EARTHQUAKE'S EPICENTER | TRIANGULATION METHOD
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QBqtC_yz_Ok
IV. PROCEDURE
A. ELICIT - Reviewing previous lesson or presenting the new lesson (Strategy 1: CHARADE)
The class will go according to their group. Each group will be given 3 minutes to guess the given word. The more
words answered correctly in the given time, will be the winner. The group will receive 2 chips each.
1. Time difference 3. epicenter 5. recording station 7. sound wave 9. body waves
2. Distance 4. arrival time 6. hypocenter 8. love waves 10. tectonic plates
B. ENGAGE - Establishing a purpose of the lesson/Presenting examples or instances of the new lesson (Strategy 2:
Recitation)
Checking of assignments
C. EXPLORE - Discussing new concepts and practicing new skill (Strategy 3: Direct Instruction & Demonstration)
Step 1: Choose one of the recording stations and
measure the computed distance on the map scale. The
scale is 1.5 cm for every 200 km. Set your compass for Step 2: Choose your compass on the station you
that computed distance.
have chosen. Draw a circle.

*The teacher may use 1 and 2 items for the discussion

on the process of Triangulation from the activity
provided below.
D. EXPLAIN - Developing Mastery (Strategy 4: Group work/Collaborative Learning)
Repeat steps 1 and 2 for the rest of the stations. You should get three circles that intersect or nearly
intersect at a point. This intersection is the epicenter.
E. ELABORATE - Finding practical application of concepts and skills in daily living/Making generalizations and
abstractions about the lesson (Strategy 5: Recitation)
Students will determine the earthquake epicenter from the intersection of the three circles on the map.
F. EVALUATE - Evaluating Learning (Strategy 6: Independent seatwork, plotting)
Students will answer Nos. 3-5 of the attached activity sheet.
G. EXTEND - Additional activities for application or remediation (Strategy 7: Assignment/asynchronous activity)
If the students did not finish the activity at the given period of time, they may continue and finish the activity at
home and checking will be in the next meeting.
