1.5 Mesh Gradient

4.4.8
VER

Mesh Gradient is another way of making gradient. Mesh gradient is applied to vector
UI

objects.

The idea behind creating Mesh Gradient is the following. You create a vector object (that is
going to be a mask for the gradient). Next, you define the size of a mesh over this shape. And
then you pick a color for each mesh vertex and change the vertices locations.

To create a Mesh gradient first create a new vector layer. Create new Vector Layer by
pressing little triangle next to plus icon on Layers docker and select Vector Layer
UI

UI

from the list.

CHAPTER 1. GENERAL 7

The next step is to create a figure that will serve

as a mask (or object we are interested in) on top of
which the gradient will be rendered.

Given that we created a vector layer we now

can create a vector object. Vector objects now
can be created at least with Line Rectangle

UI

UI

UI
UI

UI

Stop is responsible for setting the color for one point on the mesh. Rows is the num-

is the way how the colors will blend (now there are two options Bilinear and Bicubic). We will
stick to Bicubic since it gives much smoother results (keep in mind that it is a much more com-
putationally heavy algorithm).

CV

CV

will be Rule of Thirds 1.31 Figure 1.31: Grid and Guides

FIG
CHAPTER 1. GENERAL 19

Figure 1.32: Rule of Third grid illustration

Tool Explained
Yes it is possible to use simple mathematical expressions in number fields to get the
desired value. For instance, for this illustration image_width is equal to 700 and im-
age_height to 300. So X spacing and Y spacing will be respectively 233 and 100. Not
that Krita does not support macroses like image_width and image_height, these were
used just for illustration.
Due to rounding after division, the spacing for a grid might be one pixel smaller and the
fourth guide might appear on either vertical or horizontal like. Just add one more pixel
manually and it will do the trick.

pixels you want to select. Ctrl+Shift+J – target pix-
els are in the separate layer. Two helper layers can
now be removed 2.20
FIG

Figure 2.20: Result

Tool Explained
The idea behind the trick is to use Blending mode. Put it in short - blending mode is
the special way of mixing two layers between each other. For this tutorial Subtract is
used. It means that every pixel that has value (in our case RGB(224, 122, 92) ) will

COL
be subtracted from visible pixels below. Since our target value has the same value it will
result in black pixels. Once we have these filter ”masked” with black color, we can use
Color To Alpha filter to make it transparent. That means that if we select everything
UI

else and then inverse the selection we get selected target pixels.

Tool Explained
One of the drawbacks of this trick is that if the target image has a lot of black pixels it will
not work. However black pixels can be filtered out first by using Color To Alpha filter.
UI

If you take a look at figure 2.20 you can see artifact pixels selected. This is because
FIG

of blending pixels between each other. That is the issue that was mentioned in the
beginning of the tutorial.

Note that in order for this trick to work properly the image has to have nontransparent
background that is different from target color. It can be created temporarily.

CHAPTER 2. EVEN MORE GENERAL 51

Figure 2.45: Export Transparent

Tool Explained
There are many formats that are used to store pixel data. In general there are two types
of pixels stored: RGB and RGBA. The letters stend for Red, Green, Blue and Alpha. Alpha
is responsible for transparency of a pixel. It does not matter waht RGB value will be, if
alpha is set to 0 then pixel will be transparent.

Image formats such as JPEG or BMP store only RGB data. That is why exporting
transparent Krita image will lead to image without transparency. Usually transparent
pixels replaced with particular color (white or black). Pay attention to configurations in
the exporting window.

Image formats such as PNG or TIFF store data in RGBA format. What makes them suitable
for storing transparent images. However these files usually larger in size due to amount
of data being stored inside.

FIG

Figure 4.9: Tool Options

Figure 4.10: Get the selection

CHAPTER 4. MANIPULATE SELECTIONS 106

Tool Explained
To understand the logic behind this trick we need to learn a bit more about nature of
selection.

When Krita operates on selections it tracks three variables: x - horizontal position,

y - vertical position, opacity - the amount of pixel value that needs to be effected by the
operation (the value is in range between 0 and 255, where 0 no selection and 255 full
selection).

The selection mask is a red image where the more red the pixel is the more selec-
tion should be used.

While doing pixel perfect adjustment to the mask we need to consider how neigh-
boring pixels will be transformed when lets say we need to make 4 pixels wide selection
5 pixels. By default Krita uses Bilinear filter which will try to fill the gap by smoothing
the edge. This will lead to imperfect selection. To force Krita make the selection to
copy full pixel value we need to change the way Krita transforms Mask pixels. Nearest
Neighbor is one of the most simplest interpolation filter. In case of editing masks it will
just copy neighboring pixel values and put it where selection (transformation in our case)
is expanded.

4.6 Sharp Selection: Copy

4.4.8

VER
By default any pixel of a selection has Opacity value. When the selection copied only fraction
of the value of a pixel is being copied (this is better distinguishable on selection edges).
To copy full value of a selection use Edit ◃ Copy (Sharp). Cut counterpart does the same but
cutting the pixels out of the layer.

4.7 Save Selection For Later Use

4.4.8
VER

To save the selection for later use it is enough just to make of current selection mask.
Make a selection. New dynamic layer will be created with name ”Selection Mask”. Select
this layer and duplicate it Ctrl+J. Deselect Ctrl+Shift+A. Now you should observe that there is
no selection, though there is a ”Selection Mask” layer. This layer now can be renamed.
To make the same selection Ctrl + Left Mouse Click on saved selection mask layer.
CHAPTER 4. MANIPULATE SELECTIONS 107

Tool Explained
When new selection created Krita makes new layer that function as a mask. This layer
can be edited with transform and painting tools to fine tune the selection. However if we
deselect the layer disappears.
By making a duplicate we trick the Krita what selection mask to remove and hence saving
the mask for later use.

Figure 6.12: Tablet Tester

On the right side of the window you can see a log with useful information. Specifically P=45%
is a pressure value. This value can be used as a reference to configure pen pressure in provided
software outside Krita.

Tool Explained
Tablet tester was designed to validate if Krita reads Pressure Pen correctly.

There are two lines that is being shown on sketchpad. Blue and Red.

Blue line shows that pen is impacting the canvas/sketchpad - in this case tablet works as
expected.
Red line is shown all the time, it represents coordinates. If the red line is the only line that
is being shown it means that Krita read pen as a mouse and actions outside the software
should be taken. Most likely the problem with drivers and supplementary software for
the tablet. Try to reinstall everything.
