The Rizal Law
WHAT IS IT?
The Rizal Law, also known as Republic Act No.
1425, is a Philippine law that was enacted on
June 12, 1956. It mandates the inclusion of the
life, works, and writings of national hero Jose
Rizal in the curricula of all public and private
schools in the country.
Former Senator Jose P. Laurel, who helped create the
Rizal Bill, said that because Jose Rizal started the
feeling of love for our country and greatly helped how
our nation is today, it's important for all Filipinos,
especially young people, to learn about him and adopt
the great ideas he stood for.
Laurel was also named as chairman of the
Senate Committee on Education, which he
held when he sponsored in 1955 a bill that
would make José Rizal's two novels, Noli Me
Tángere and El filibusterismo, as compulsory
readings in all universities and colleges.
