QUESTIONS & PROBLEMS: An Exercise to Verify the Principles of Series and Parallel
Connections of Resistors
1. What are the laws governing series circuits?

2. What are the laws governing parallel circuits?

3. A resistance of unknown resistance is connected in parallel to a 3-ohm resistor. The ammeter in

the 3 ohm a resistor registers 0.4 ampere and in the unknown one 0.6 ampere. What is the
resistance of the unknown resistors? What are their combined resistors?

4. The terminal voltage of a battery is found to be 4.2 volts. Two resistors of 2 & 4 ohms are
connected in series to a battery. A single resistor of unknown resistance is connected in parallel to
the two resistors. A current of 1.4 amps is registered in the ammeter of the unknown resistors.
What is the current in 2-ohm resistor? What is the voltage in the 4-ohm resistor?

5. Calculate the resistance between A and B.
