LABORATORY ACTIVITY 1
KINECTIC AND POTENTIAL ENERGY

Name: Brent Francis Y. Magsaysay Grade Level: Grade 8

Section: Blessed Augustine of Tarano Due Date: 09/20/2021

I. OBJECTIVE:

 Determine the potential energy and kinetic energy of a ball in free fall

II. MATERIALS:

 A ball (ex: tennis ball)

 stopwatch
 ruler/meterstick
 2 boxes

III. SCIENTIFIC METHOD

A. Problem

1. Is there a relationship between height of drop and potential energy?

2. Is there a relationship between height of drop and kinetic energy?

B. Hypothesis

1. The higher the distance the greater the potential energy.

2. The higher the distance the greater the kinetic energy.

C. Data Gathering Procedure

1. Weigh the ball in grams.

2. Drop the ball from a height of 1 meter into the first box. Record the time of free fall with your
stopwatch.
3. Drop the ball from a height of 2 meters into the second box. Record the time of free fall with
your stopwatch.
4. Calculate the velocity of the ball upon impact, using V = 9.8 t where t is the time in seconds
after it is dropped.

D. Analysis of Data/Problem Solving

1. What is the mass of the ball?

0.015kg
2. What is the weight of the ball?
0.147N or kg,m/s²

3. What is the potential energy of the ball in each height? (Show your solution)

HEIGHT OF 1 METER

A) FORMULA: PE = mgh

B) SUBSTITUTIONS OF THE GIVEN WITH COMPLETE UNITS:

Given: 0.015kg, 9.8m/s², 1 meter

Solution:
PE = (0.015 x 9.8m/s²) (1m)
PE = 0.147J

C) FINAL ANSWER:
The potential energy of the ball in one meter is 0.147 joules.

HEIGHT OF 2 METERS

A) FORMULA: PE = mgh

B) SUBSTITUTIONS OF THE GIVEN WITH COMPLETE UNITS:

Given: 0.015kg, 9.8m/s², 2m

Solution:
PE = (0.015kg x 9.8m/s²) (2m)
PE = 0.294J

C) FINAL ANSWER: The potential energy of the ball in two meters is 0.294 joules.

4. What is the kinetic energy of the ball as it hits each boxes? (Show your solution)

FIRST BOX

A) FORMULA: KE = ½ mv²

B) SUBSTITUTIONS OF THE GIVEN WITH COMPLETE UNITS:

Given: 0.015kg,
Solution:
V= gt
V= (9.8m/s²)(0.48s)
V= 4.7 m/s
KE = (0.5 x 0.015) (4.7/s) ²
KE = (0.0075) (22.09)
KE = 0.165675J

C) FINAL ANSWER: The kinetic energy of the ball in the first box is 0.165675J joules.

SECOND BOX

A) FORMULA: KE = ½ mv²

B) SUBSTITUTIONS OF THE GIVEN WITH COMPLETE UNITS:

Given: 0.015kg,
Solution:
V= gt
V= (9.8m/s²)(0.65s)
V= 6.37m/s
KE = (0.5 x 0.015) (6.37m/s) ²
KE = (0.0075) (40.5769)
KE = 0.30433J

C) FINAL ANSWER: The kinetic energy of the ball in the second box is 0.30433 joules

IV. CONCLUSION

The hypothesis previously stated is TRUE / FALSE (encircle one).

The higher the distance the greater the potential energy. The higher the distance the greater the kinetic
energy.

(Write your own conclusion for three sentences only)

As the height of the ball dropped increases, the percentage of potential energy lost also increases.
This is due to the increase of time in the air as there is an increase in drop height. The higher the
distance of the ball dropped, the kinetic energy increases especially by the time it hits its target,
potential energy is lost during this process.
