d. Number of Beneficiaries: 30 -50 pupils identified as struggling readers

of San Juan Baño E/S

e. Location of Beneficiaries: San Juan Baño Elementary School

f. Date of Implementation/Duration: September 2021

g. Area of Project Implementation: San Juan Baño Elementary School

h. Budget Requirement: Small amount of budget needed, since resources/

materials are already available such as laptop and
smartphones for teachers and students.

i. Budget Requested: P 500.00

II. Background/Situation Analysis (Identify the existing problem(s) in school, provide data
to support the existence of the problem, introduce your innovation/intervention, provide
learning theory the intervention/innovation/strategy is anchored on, and finally, provide
related studies/literature that prove the effectiveness of the innovation. To avoid plagiarism,
kindly paraphrase cited related studies.)

'Without innovation, creativity, or incentive for improvement, change is unlikely to

happen. San Juan Baño Elementary School is continuously committed to supply accessible
and high-quality distance learning resources to all learners amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
These abrupt changes created new challenges for teachers and their learners, and they
require continuous supply of high-quality distance learning resources to respond to them.

Before the pandemic, many learners struggled to read well. Now, the pandemic
looming above, learners and teachers are under increasing pressure to show early
progress and success in reading. As some may worry, it also has to do with a concern that
learners will be “left behind” if they are not reading independently. This situation often leads
to intervention as a strategy for boosting the skills of slow or reluctant readers.

Reading, is the bedrock of literacy, it is the foundational skill necessary for all
academic progress. Reading also develops comprehension skills and helps to broaden
general knowledge. Improving systems for reading instructions is essential to ensure a
pipeline of students who remain in school, achieve educational success, and contribute to
economic growth. A 2019 study published in Psychological Science found that people’s
ability to understand text was “compromised” when they were unfamiliar with 59 percent of
the terms in a topic.

Many research shows that reading with comprehension skills should be taught in a
clear and explicit manner. This is to ensure that children will maintain a positive attitude
towards studying and will be able to learn and retain information. Many families and
teachers are worried that children will lose their interest and fall behind in learning during
this time of coronavirus pandemic.

As a course of action, SJBES teachers, through continuous and rigorous trainings,

are well-equipped to deliver lessons and conduct consultations online. In accordance with
technological advances, the proponent proposes Project LETTER the computer-based
reading remedial instruction a free online tutorial platform for learners given by the
teachers, who assume the role of a facilitator and guide the identified slow and non-
readers to another level of the learning experience with the fusion of Microsoft Powerpoint
and Classpoint. All stories/passages are presented through Microsoft Powerpoint combine

with Classpoint. These work well with virtual conferencing platforms such as Google Meet,
Zoom and Facebook Chat room.

It allows teachers to quickly turn their PPT slides into interactive quizzes, run the
quizzes with students, collect their live responses, score students, & save data. It adds
interactions to online presentations and makes sure students are engaged virtually.
Teachers don’t need to learn and use a separate software. According to Frits Pannekoek,
the contributors to this second edition, online learning has to include mobile learning, e-
gaming, online communities, and learning management systems that empower each
student.
Learners grasp how to read through slides version for digital distance learning. After
reading stories and passages, students can study and evaluate themselves on the
interactive worksheets and various types of questions, it can also complete activities on-line
and on their own. Students can read, highlight and respond directly on the slides. Making
reading fun, enjoyable and develop a love of reading. This remedial in reading will also help
parents to guide the studies of their children right at the comfort of their homes.
Furthermore, it will serve as an adjunct to the modules or learning activity sheets to
be used as a teaching and learning aid. It is for this purpose that this project was
conceptualized.

PowerPoint.

IV. Desired Impact and Outcome of the Project (present and long-term effect)
(Provide a situation indicating the current situation and its negative effect(s), and the
projected outcome once the intervention is introduced. Show how the impact of the
innovation will be measured by presenting targets.)

In face to face education is well documented to promote better student-teacher,

student-student interaction, which can lead to greater engagement. According to the Social
Learning Theory, social learning occurs through direct interaction with peers or by
observing the behavior of peers. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused many
face-to-face opportunities for formal and informal learning to cease and it has forced us to
move to exclusive delivery through virtual education. The impact of this change to teaching
and learning, on both learners and teachers, is largely unknown.
Schools around the world have transitioned to distance education, most of which is
planned to be delivered online. Educators may use a variety of blended learning tools for
this process, which may include synchronous online tutorials, E-learning in simulation
sessions, asynchronous activity in moderated discussion, formative quizzes and other
teacher-directed or self-directed learning activities. Engaging with these learning methods
has received mixed reviews, as they are often perceived to be less effective than
conventional classroom-based teaching. Online learning environments require both
teachers and learners to adjust to new learning styles and learning preferences, with active
learning and collaboration emphasized. As educators we need to think of a way to further
enhance our struggling readers.
Why should we care? Our struggling readers are ones who could easily be left
behind if we do not open up to them the possibilities of online reading. We cannot afford to
ignore struggling readers by allowing them to fall behind their peers in the digital/new
literacies gap. It seems like appropriate time to draw attention to this issue and share

suggestion for educators seeking to support struggling students in online reading.

Struggling readers need explicit strategy instruction, and we know this.
This innovation aims to deliver reading materials via the internet for student-teacher
interaction so as to give special assistance to students with reading and comprehension
difficulties during the COVID-19 pandemic. With the advancement of technology-assisted
learning, teachers will be able to promote self-directed learning and interactive assessment
within their students, even in the comfort of their own homes. It also assists in engaging a
large group of students at one time and in one-on-one interactions between the teacher and
learner. Similarly, online delivery of reading intervention as a component of blended
learning permits teachers to flexibly adjust to student learning styles and evaluate them. It
may assist teachers to provide the necessary support required for the individual student
while feedback may not be possible in a large group face-to-face session.
V. Risk Management Plan (Identify the strengths for the project to be realized, its
weaknesses that may hamper the project and how such can be addressed to ensure its
sustainability.)

Indicate also the competencies the innovation intends to target. bn For teachers, a lesson
plan can be included using the innovation.

The success of this innovation can be measured through the feedbacks and testimony of the
teachers and students’ who adopt/ use the project. As well as the post evaluation results of the
EGRA and PhilIRI. Feedback shall also be done to better improvement.

Pursuant to Deped Order No. 14, s. 2020, Regulations on the Required Health Standards in
Basic Education Offices and schools, this innovation aims to provide healthy and safe learning
opportunities for our learners and teachers. Teacher professional development is essential for
maintaining the academic standards and it includes adopting to the trends and transformations,
one of which is the integration of technology. Since ICT-based teaching and learning provides
professional development, which is in high demand nowadays, it can be used as a new and
practical way of ensuring that teachers and learners will be safe from the threat of Covid-19 as
the teaching and learning process continues.
Despite the challenging situation, we have had experienced as educators, learning never
stops and professional development must continue to better equip teachers with the essential
competencies as facilitators of learning. Philippine Professional Standard for Teacher or DepEd
Order No. 42, s. 2017 the activity focus on Domain no. 1, Content Knowledge and Pedagogy
(PPST Strand 1.1.3) one of its focus is the positive use of ICT, the proponent believes that
Project LETTER is one way of letting teachers to see the advantage of using ICT utilizing
teaching and learning process. It also address on strategies for promoting literacy and
numeracy for the learners.

To achieve the project objectives, a step-by-step methodology has been followed.
