READINGS IN PHILIPPINE HISTORY:

MIDTERM REVIEWER
Primary Sources: an original object or document - the raw material or first-hand
information, source material that is closest to what is being studied.
Secondary Sources: one that was created later by someone that did not experience
firsthand or participate in the events in which the author is writing about. Secondary
sources often summarize, interpret, analyze or comment on information found in
primary sources.

Contextual Analysis: one that was created later by someone that did not experience
firsthand or participate in the events in which the author is writing about. Secondary
sources often summarize, interpret, analyze or comment on information found in
primary sources.
Contentual Analysis: Deals with determining whether the information provided by the
author is logical to prove a logical basis leading to the the truth. The authors
argument ,biases and claims should be based on the evidence presented within the
source.

THE FIRST VOYAGE OF MAGELLAN

Location: San Lucar, Barameda Spain
Fleet: Five ships - Trinidad (Flagship), San Antonio, Concepción, Victoria, and Santiago
Crew: Approximately 270 men, including sailors, soldiers, and officers. Ferdinand
Magellan was the captain-general of the expedition.
Route to the Strait of Magellan:
King in Spain: King Charles the First
King in Portugal: King Manuel
December 13, 1520: After a challenging journey down the west coast of Africa and
across the Atlantic Ocean, the expedition reached what would later be known as the
March 6, 1521: Magellan’s crew landed in The island of Guam.
Discovery of the Philippines:
Interpreter of Magellan: Enrique of Malaca
March 16, 1521: The Arrival in Zamal (island of samar).The expedition reached the
Philippines. Here, they made contact with indigenous people, including Rajah Humabon
(King Carlos) Rajah Humaway (Queen Juana), the ruler of the Limasawa island.
March 31, 1521: The first mass in the Philippines occurred it was hosted by Father
Pedro Valderama.
800 souls were baptized
Magellans gift to Rajah Humabon’s Wife: Santo Nino.
April 7,1521: They arrived in Zubu (Cebu)
April 27,1521: The Great Battle of Mactan occurred where 40 men of Magellan using
armors,cannons and swords while the 1500 men of Lapu-Lapu outnumbered them with
bolos (machete). This is where Ferdinand Magellan died including the 31 casualties
leaving 18 survivors in the Spanish army.
November 5 1521: The two ship Victoria,Trinidad arrived at the island of Molluca (Spice
Island)
September 16 1522: Captained by Juan Sebastian Elcano the Victoria ship arrived in
spain.
