PRACTICE PROBLEM NO.

1 – FLUID MECHANICS (CE 4C)

DUE DATE : SEPTEMBER 28, 2022, 9:00 AM

Problem no. 1. The tank shown contains water at 15 degrees Celsius where its specific
weight is 9.798 kN/m3. When heated at 60 degrees Celsius, its specific weight is 9.642
kN/m3. How much water will spill over the edge of the tank? Assume that the tank
does not expand with the change in temperature.

Problem No. 2. A vessel at 40 degrees Fahrenheit contains a 5.0 ft3 of water. If the water
is heated at 80 degrees Fahrenheit, what will be the percentage change in its volume?
What weight of water must be removed to maintain the volume at its original Value?
Use γ40 = 62.43 pcf, γ80 = 62.22 pcf

Problem No. 3. If the specific weight of a gas is 12.40 N/m3, what is its specific volume in
m3/kg?

Problem No. 4. A gas sample weight 0.108 lb/ft3 at a certain temperature and pressure.
What are the values of its density, specific volume, and specific gravity relative to air
weighing o.075 lb/ft3?

Problem No. 5. A certain liquid weight 8,600 N/m3, determine its density, specific
volume and specific gravity relative to water at 15 degrees Celsius where 𝜌 =
999.1 𝑘𝑔/𝑚

Problem No. 6. A cylindrical tank of methanol has a mass of 40kg and a volume of 51L.
Determine the methanol’s weight, density, and specific gravity. Take the gravitational
acceleration to be 9.81 m/s2. Also, estimate how much force is needed to accelerate
this tank linearly at 0.25 m/s2.
