UNDERSTANDING THE SELF

MODULE 12
MANAGING AND CARING FOR THE SELF:
Learning to be a Better Student

Name: Jirah Joy Barranda Peañar

Course & Section: BSED English 1A
Instructor: Ms. Joeby Elisha Rellon
ACTIVITY:
React on this saying given by Carl Rogers below.
"The only person who is educated is the one who has learned how to learn and change"
● Carl Rogers
- You can only say to be educated if you have learned and applied what you have learned in every
situation and experience in your life. You made the decision to make a significant change as a
result of what you've learned. Experiences are useless if no learning is acquired and no changes
are made. Always remember that education is about you, not your degree or diploma; it is about
how your life experiences mold and develop you. Furthermore, learning is a lifelong process.

ASSIMILATION/APPLICATION:
React to the following questions:
1. How do behaviorists define learning?
- Behaviorists define learning as a relatively permanent change in behavior as a result of
practice or experiences. They believed that we should watch for observable changes in
behavior to find out what people were learning.
2. Explain the meaning of neuroplasticity?
- Neuroplasticity is the ability of neural networks in the brain to change through growth
and reorganization. These changes range from individual neuron pathways making new
connections, to systematic adjustments like cortical remapping. The process of
neuroplasticity, or changes in the structure and functions of the neurons in the brain,
usually happens in the cerebral cortex which is the wrinkled layer of the brain.
3. Why are neurons considered as building blocks of the nervous system?
- Neurons are considered as building blocks of the nervous system because it is the cells
that make up our brain. It is a specialized cell that transmits and stores information of
different kinds.
4. Differentiate metacognitive knowledge from metacognitive regulation.
- Metacognitive knowledge includes knowledge of one's own cognitive abilities,
knowledge of cognitive tasks, and knowledge of the strategies to complete the cognitive
tasks while metacognitive regulation refers to how an individual monitors and controls
his or her cognitive processes.
ASSESSMENT
1. Draw the parts of a Neuron and label each part.

2. Describe the function of each part.

a. Cell Body (Soma)
- The cell body, also called the soma, is the spherical part of the neuron that
contains the nucleus and holds all of the general parts of the cell. The cell body
connects to the dendrites, which bring information to the neuron, and the axon,
which sends information to other neurons.
b. Dendrites
- Dendrites are appendages that are designed to receive communications from other
cells. They resemble a tree-like structure, forming projections that become
stimulated by other neurons and conduct the electrochemical charge to the cell
body (or, more rarely, directly to the axons).
c. Axon
- An axon is a thin fiber that extends from a neuron, or nerve cell, and is
responsible for transmitting electrical signals to help with sensory perception and
movement. Each axon is surrounded by a myelin sheath, a fatty layer that
insulates the axon and helps it transmit signals over long distances.
d. Terminal Buttons
- The terminal buttons are located at the end of the neuron and are responsible for
sending the signal to other neurons.
e. Myelin Sheath
- Myelin is an insulating layer or sheath that forms around nerves, including those
in the brain and spinal cord. It is made up of protein and fatty substances. This
myelin sheath allows electrical impulses to transmit quickly and efficiently along
with the nerve cells.
3. Select one benefit of metacognition and self-regulation in learning and give your reflection.
- One of the benefits of metacognition and self-regulation in learning is that it helps
students improve their academic performance and become successful. We can achieve
these benefits if we practice and develop metacognition and self-regulation. Be aware of
and understand our own thought processes, since we all have the ability and capability to
be successful in life in some way.
