CASE-BASED QUESTIONS ( 4X3=12)
34. Read the source given below and answer the questions that follows:
We all appreciate the strong dependence of industry and agriculture upon mineral deposits and the
substances manufactured from them. The total volume of workable mineral deposits is an insignificant
fraction i.e. one per cent of the earth’s crust. We are rapidly consuming mineral resources that required
millions of years to be created and concentrated. The geological processes of mineral formation are so
slow that the rates of replenishment are infinitely small in comparison to the present rates of
consumption. Mineral resources are, therefore, finite and non-renewable. Rich mineral deposits are our
country’s extremely valuable but short-lived possessions. Continued extraction of ores leads to increasing
costs as mineral extraction comes from greater depths along with decrease in quality.
34.1. Why is it important to conserve mineral resources? (2)
34.2. What efforts are required to conserve mineral resources? Suggest any two ways. (2)
35. Read the source given below and answer the questions that follows:
Very often parties do not seem to offer a meaningful choice to the voters. In order to offer meaningful
choice, parties must be significantly different. In recent years there has been a decline in the ideological
differences among parties in most parts of the world. For example, the difference between the Labour
Party and the Conservative Party in Britain is very little. They agree on more fundamental aspects but
differ only in details on how policies are to be framed and implemented. In our country too, the
differences among all the major parties on the economic policies have reduced. Those who want really
different policies have no option available to them. Sometimes people cannot even elect very different
leaders either, because the same set of leaders keep shifting from one party to another.
35.1. There has been a decline in the ideological difference among parties in most part of the world. Give
an example to substantiate your answer. (1)
35.2. Why do people express their dissatisfaction with the failure of political parties to perform their
functions well? (1)

36. Read the source given below and answer the questions that follows:
Following the defeat of Napoleon in 1815, European governments were driven by a spirit of
conservatism. Conservatives believed that established, traditional institutions of state and society – like
the monarchy, the Church, social hierarchies, property and the family –should be preserved. Most
conservatives, however, did not propose a return to the society of pre-revolutionary days. Rather, they
realised, from the changes initiated by Napoleon, that modernisation could in fact strengthen traditional
institutions like the monarchy. It could make state power more effective and stronger. A modern army, an
efficient bureaucracy, a dynamic economy, the abolition of feudalism and serfdom could strengthen the
autocratic monarchies of Europe. In 1815, representatives of the European powers who had collectively
defeated Napoleon, met at Vienna to draw up a settlement for Europe. The Congress was hosted by the
Austrian Chancellor Duke Metternich. The delegates drew up the Treaty of Vienna of 1815 with the object
of undoing most of the changes that had come about in Europe during the Napoleonic wars. The Bourbon
dynasty, which had been deposed during the French Revolution, was restored to power, and France lost
the territories it had annexed under Napoleon. A series of states were set up on the boundaries of France
to prevent French expansion in future.
36.1. Identify the purpose to convene the Vienna of Congress in 1815. What did conservatives focus on at the
Congress of Vienna? (2)
