Prevailing Beliefs in the
“Kaluluwa” and/or “Spirit”
among Ethnolinguistic group

❖ From the root word “duwa” (two)

Kaluluwa (Tagalog) Gimukod (Bagobo)

Karuruwa o kadua (Ilocano) Kalagkalag (Cuyunin, Palawan)
Dunggan and kalag (Ilonggo) Makatu (Bukidnon)
“duwa” or two (Jocano [cited by
Mercado,1991])
First entity (for Ibanags) is the companion of the
body. It complements the human; it is the one who
gives “direction and wholeness to the man”.

Second entity also resides in a person, the life

force (for Ilocano). The Ilocano term karma or
karkarma (which means soul, vigor, energy,
strength, power, ghost, spook) stays with the
individual and leaves the body through the nose
only when the person dies.
CHRISTIAN BELIEFS

soul and spirit are two different entities

When the person dies,

the spirit is the one that returns to
God
the soul is the one that will receive
the judgment. It will go either in
heaven or in hell.

Filipino concepts of Loob,
Kapwa, and Ginhawa: the
expression of spirituality
The concept of “loob” is important to the study
of “pagkatao” (self) and “kaluluwa” (spirit).
Loob is the innermost part of the self
(Ileto,1979 as cited by Alejo 1990).
It is the true meaning of self and the center of the
most important aspect of the individual.
in loob lies the “relational will” of a person, the will
towards his/her kapwa (Reyes, 2015).
From: LOOB to KAPWA
◉ Loob has
1) Abot-malay (kabuoang aspeto ng
kamalayan)

1) Abot-dama (pananatiling may talab

sa kalooban na nagpapatindi ng abot-
malay) and

1) Abot-kaya (isang galaw, isang

pagsisikap, ang loob na naisasabuhay
sa aksyon)
From: LOOB to KAPWA

◉ Kapwa is not the same with “others”

◉ It is translated as:
▪ “shared identity
▪ “shared self”
▪ “self-in-the-other”
“ang mabuting loob ay dumadaloy
palabas upang maipadama sa kapwa”
SYNTHETIC CONVENTIONAL STAGE

- Individual has the capacity for

'operational thinking‘

- Faith may now synthesize

different beliefs, information, and
values to have a 'stable identity'
INDIVIDUATE-REFLECTIVE STAGE
- - the beginnings of questioning/challenging
previously held beliefs
- - developed regard of God as a friend or ally
- - belief that God accepts Him/her as
himself/herself
- - belief that God brings light to ones send of
purpose and life
ANITISM
Belief that nature derives energy from
spirits that are separate
and distinct from human beings/bodies.
These spirits dwell in
people, animals, stones, rivers, tree and
others.
▪ Prevail over people who do not regard
themselves as superior
over nature

Spiritual journeys are nothing like A
DEAL. They usually take people in
mysterious ways towards unknown
destinations.
- A spiritual quest usually
begins with big question, such
as who am I?
- What is the meaning of life?
- What is good?
Therefore,
finding ones’ purpose and meaning of existence in the context of
spirituality leads us to the direction of

(1) assessing the own process of spiritual self development,

(2) acknowledging the existence of a Supreme Being as the Creator,

(3) deepening the connection to the Creator,

(4) believeing that the Creator has a premeditated purpose for His
creations,

(5) depending on His perfect will, and lastly,

(6) reflecting on the interpersonal relationships (our pakikipag-

kapwa and service to our fellowbeings).

but neither is it a burden.
Wisdom is freedom, freedom
to pursue the Creator
