Course Name: Computational Methods for Metallurgy

Objective of the course:

Course Content:

Error analysis and evaluation of functions, Numerical differentiation and integration. [6L]

Root finding problems: solution of linear and non-linear systems of equations, Minmax
problems: minimization and maximization of functions, Linear and non-linear least
squares optimization and Interpolation with special emphasis on computer implementation
and applications in metallurgical engineering. [12L]

Initial and boundary value problems in ordinary and partial differential equations.
Introduction to finite difference (FDM) and finite element (FEM) methods. Applications in
materials processing: heat transfer and solidification; metal forming processes etc. [12L]

Simulation of simple metallurgical systems using Monte-Carlo Simulations and simulated


annealing. Simulation of microstructure evolution and grain growth in metals and
alloys. [9L]
