How to Achieve Your

Financial Goals
Worksheet:
7 Steps
Dr. Brad Klontz
STEP 1:
Pick 3 Financial Goals
What are you top 3 financial goals? Is it a house, a car, a
vacation, an early retirement? Whatever they are, write
them down under the STEP 1 column below:

STEP 1 STEP 2

1. ____________________________ _________

2. ____________________________ _________

3.____________________________ _________

Step 2: Passion Test Your

Goals
Next to each goal, rate how passionate you are on a scale of 1-
10, where 10 = total passion and 1 = no passion at all. Put the
number under the Step 2 column above.

If you can't give a goal a 9-10 rating, consider substituting it

with a new one.
STEP 3: Name Your Goals
Go back to your goals and rename them below. The
objective here is to become very specific about the goal.
Create a mental picture of it - something that conjures up
images and that you can get really excited about.

So for example, instead of writing "vacation," as a goal you

would get more specific: "Family European Vacation
Fund." Instead of college fund you would write: (Insert
child's name here)'s College Fund.

NAME DATE

1. ____________________________ _________

2. ____________________________ _________

3.____________________________ _________

Step 4: Time Stamp

Your Goals
Now, go back above and include a date
by which you plan to achieve these
these goals. So your goal would now
read "Family European Vacation Fund
2020."
STEP 5:
Picture Your Financial Goals
Now this is where it gets fun. If you are serious about
achieving your financial goals, this is a powerful
technique. In a recent study we were able to increase
savings rates by an average of 73% using this technique.
So take some time with this one!

Create a visual image of your goals. Draw them, cut out

pictures from magazines or download them from the
internet and put them on a poster board.

Keep these images in a place you can see them daily -

hang them on the wall, use them as your computer or
phone wallpaper.
STEP 6:
Create Sub-Accounts
In this step, you are going to create sub-accounts for
your financial goals.

This is easily done for investment accounts such as IRAs,

401(k)s, or 529 college savings plans. However, many
financial institutions now allow you to do this for
savings accounts. If you bank allows this, set-up sub-
accounts and give them the names you created in Step 3.

Step 7: Automate Your Success

Now that you have a clear picture of what you want and
accounts dedicated to each goal it's time to guarantee
success!

Capitalize on your clarity and passion and take action

today to set-up automatic deposits from your checking
account to your savings accounts, or in the case of
employer sponsored plans, contact your employer and
set-up automatic salary deferrals that get deposited into
your retirement account.

We all have a natural bias to keep with the status quo so

set up these automatic deposits and before
you know it you will reach your goals!
