CIRRHOSIS
Cirrhosis is a condition in which your liver is scarred and permanently damaged. Scar tissue replaces
healthy liver tissue and prevents your liver from working normally. As cirrhosis gets worse, your liver
begins to fail.
CAUSES:
Cirrhosis is a long-term (chronic) liver disease. The most common causes are hepatitis and other
viruses, and alcohol abuse. Other medical problems can also cause it.
SYMPTOMS:
Loss of appetite.
Unexpected weight loss.
Yellow tint to your skin or the whites of your eyes (jaundice).
Itchy skin.
Swelling (edema) in your legs, feet and ankles.
Fluid buildup in your belly/abdomen (ascites).
GUIDELINES:
1. Don't drink alcohol. Whether your cirrhosis was caused by chronic alcohol use or another disease,
avoid alcohol.
2. Eat a low-sodium diet.
3. Eat a healthy diet.
4. Avoid infections.
5. Use over-the-counter medications carefully.
FOOD TO EAT FOOD TO AVOID
Fruits: apples, oranges, berries, Highly processed foods: fast food, convenience
pears, peaches, plums meals, canned soups, packaged snacks.
Vegetables: broccoli, cauliflower, , Unhealthy fats: margarine, vegetable
tomatoes, peas, potatoes shortening, fried foods.
Protein foods: eggs, dairy Salty snacks: chips, crackers, pretzels,
products, seafood, poultry microwave popcorn.
Legumes: beans, lentils, chickpeas Processed meats: sausage, beef jerky.
Seeds: pumpkin seeds, flaxseed, Soda drinks
chia seed.
Whole grains: quinoa, oats, brown
rice, buckwheat
Heart-healthy fats: olive oil,
coconut oil etc.
