SECTION B: Attempt any three (3) questions

SECTION C: Compulsory question

SECTION A: Attempt all questions (55 marks)

1. Define:
a. Detection line (3 marks)
b. Manual call point (MCP) (3 marks)
2. Before fire detector system installation, you have to conduct a site survey. Hence,
a. What is a site survey? (4 marks)
b. List any four (4) purposes of conducting a site survey (4 marks)
3. State two main objectives of installing a fire detector and alarm system in a building. (4
marks)
4. State if the following statements are true or false (4 marks)
a. EOLR is used as an auxiliary device in a fire detector and alarm system.

1
b. Manual call point can be used by an operator to initiate alarm signal.
c. Water sprinkler acts as an automatic fire protection equipment.
d. Smoke is one of the indicators of fire, and it is detected by a heat detector.
5. Provide the difference between conventional system and addressable system in terms of alarm
functionality. (5 marks)

6. How can you select fire detector system cables? (4 marks)

7. Match column A with column B (8 marks)

A B

Cable trunking A tube used in wiring installations to protect

and route electrical cables by keeping them
organized.

American Wire Gauge A rigid, thin-wall tube that is generally made

of coated steel.

Electrical Metallic Tubing An enclosure with one removable side, which

is used to protect and route electrical cables
by keeping them organized
Cable conduit A standard set for specifying the sizes of
non-ferrous wires

8. Consider the following fire alarm cable.

a. What does FPLP stand for? (2 marks)

b. What technique did they use to lay the same cable? (2 marks)

2
9. a. What is the purpose of using End of Line Resistor (EOLR) in fire detector and alarm
system? (4 marks)

b. Give two other components which are mostly used as end of line devices. (2 marks)

10. When we are describing cable conduits, what do the following abbreviations stand for? (6
marks)

a. PVC

b. RMC

c. FMC

SECTION B: Attempt any three (3) questions (30 marks)

10. Suppose that you are the fire alarm technician. If the following list of fire detector and alarm
system devices is given to you, classify them as initiating devices and notification appliances.
(10 marks)
a. Infrared detectors f. sprinkler water flow sensors
b. Bells g. Horns
c. Manually operated pull stations h. Fixed temperature heat detectors
d. ionization smoke detectors i. chimes
e. Strobe lights j. Photoelectric smoke detectors
11. As a fire alarm technician, you know there are different techniques for fixing and connecting
cables conduits and trunking. Describe those techniques. (10 marks)
12. a. You are invited to pass a written test for the position of fire detector and alarm system
operator. What will be your answer if you are asked to give the standards for fixing and
connecting fire detector system devices? (5 marks)
b. Give three (3) examples of auxiliary devices that are used in fire detectors system. (5
marks)
13. Suppose that the following tools and devices are bought and used in fire detector and alarm
system installation. If you are selected as fire alarm technician to buy these tools and
devices,

SECTION C: Compulsory question (15 marks)

4
15. a. What is the role of the diodes in the bases of the smoke or heat detectors shown below? (5
marks)

b. A telecommunication company invites you to install a fire detector and alarm system that
consists of two zones and one sounder circuit. The first zone is formed by the circuit in (a), the
second zone is not occupied by the devices, and the sounder circuit is formed by three sounders
(alarms) and an end of line resistor. If the following fire alarm control panel is used to build this
system and is powered by two batteries (12V DC for one battery), draw the wiring diagram of
this system you are going to install. (10 marks)
